The future of Boarding Passes on your iPhone is now available....

Yup, pretty cool for anyone flying out of San Francisco International Airport (SFO)since they just activated the program, but the majority of us in the Bay Area avoid SFO at all costs, b/c there's too much traffic to and from SFO, unless your flight is a redeye. Just wish they would setup the program at Oakland, San Jose and Sacramento Airports....:cool:

I hear ya about SFO. I visit friends in the Bay Area quite often. I usually try to fly in to San Jose because SFO is too crowded like you say.

Hope SEA (Seattle-Tacoma) gets the barcode system soon, too!
 
I fly out of San Diego these days, and I don't think they will be one of the first to adopt this. Maybe LAX/SNA will though.

Side note: I miss ZDTV. Good to see Sumi Das still doing the same things these days.
 
Seatac better get this... It took them forever to get those epass machines though, so don't count on it.

Epass should stick a scanner on their machines somehow.

+1 ^^^ On Sea-Tac, I fly there about 3-4 times a year and that would definitely speed things up....:cool:

Yeah, Sumi Das caught my eye right off the bat; she's a great reporter. Maybe they'll get it setup at Ontario Airport as well...:cool:

As a resident of Sacramento, +1

But as the locals are still up in arms about SMF getting the $15m grant to renovate the entire field, it may not happen here at all.

SNA and LAX are reasons alone why it will not happen there first! There's flow control in and out of there daily to the point where they wouldn't have the time let alone capacity to do it.

SAN is a prime candidate for it, as you can get in and out of there very fast.

Used it at Bush Houston once, but was caught when I didn't realize that SLC, Utah didn't have it. Wife was not too happy that we had to go back and print passes after standing in the security line. :eek:

I work for an airline and it's slowly being rolled. There are two issues with e-boarding passes:
1. TSA - they have to sign off on it per each airport. Verifying security of the passenger.
2. The cost. Depending on the airport, which airline wants to incur the cost of purchasing the scanning equipment for the e-BPs.

The airlines are only installing right now at the airports where there is a high level of business travelers that the airline has a stake in.
 
oooo wee they are making a huge deal about this being out for the iPhone. Really this is just the next thing over all because if you think about it what are 3 things the average person takes with them everywhere they go.

Answer is
1. Wallet
2. Car keys(keys)
3. Cell phone.

The cell phone is quickly going to replace those other 2 items. The first thing the cell phone will kill off is the wallet because it will not be long before our cell phones will have our id and credit cards stored on them. It will just be select the card you want to use on the phone and wave it over a deices (much like Express pay system on todays cards) and your credit card is charged. your id is in your phone.

The next thing after that will be using the same basic techlogy your keys will be stored in your phone. We already have id badges that we wave in front of a reader to get into work so that is not to far off to see. We just have to put them in our home locks. And with the push to start tech in cars already the phone just has to be on the person never coming out of the pocket to unlock and start a car. They will just do the same things here.

It will be a nice day for when I go out to store the only thing I would need to carry is my cell phone.

It's like they're discovering fire once again.

In Spain we've had mobile check-in and boarding passes like that for years now. It's pretty cool, tho :)
 
In Europe it's possible to get the boarding pass on the cell phone at almost every important airport when flying e.g. Lufthansa.

At the risk of asking what may be a dense question, so what happens when said phone is stolen? If your only ID is on it, how do you go about proving who you are when filing claims, etc.? I just can't see them ever doing away with hard-copy IDs entirely.

You can merely walk to the boarding pass machine and print out a new one, then proceed with your picture ID to the gate. The boarding pass doesn't double as a form of identification....:cool:

No, I know that--I was referring to what the PP said in the post that I quoted, that phones would soon replace wallets altogether. Everything would be stored on the phone, which would present huge problems if the phone were stolen (I'd imagine...but I'd also imagine someone will come up with a way to circumvent issues, as they always seem to do). At the rate phones are stolen today just for the hardware, I can't imagine what'll happen to theft rates if everyone's vital info is also stored on them.
