I know this is a mac forum but I figure you guys might have some windows experience. You guys have motivated me to start ripping my dvds. Unfortunately this will probably take forever on my macbook. I have a brand new i7 quad core pc and wanted to know if there was a handbrake like program I could use? All the pc video conversion software ive ever used has always been a headache where you had to install multiple codecs and then it still would create sync issues and everything else. thanks in advance.

Handbrake is available for Windows and is pretty handbrake-like. :D

Hopefully you guys/gals don't live in the States, it's a crime now to rip DVDs. The law is stated oddly, tha act of actually ripping isn't unlawful nor is the finished product but the software to break the protection IS and this guy got a few years in prison and a crap of fines.

Thankfully the studios are finding ways to "calm" the people who wanted to archive their collections by offering digital copies on most discs now....

ive heard lots of bad things about the windows version however im giving it a go now lol. we'll see.

how can they charge you with a crime if you own the dvd lol thats silly.

I've never tried the Windows version either, but the price is right for giving it a try. The only Windows ones I've used are very old. DVD Decrypter and DVD43.

well it wouldnt rip the dvd just kept "scanning" so I had to download an old version of dvd decrypter now to get it off the disc then ill try handbrake to convert it.

no luck on handbrake. I get a BSOD everytime I try to encode the movie with the universal preset. im running windows 7 64bit.

Note the following from the Handbrake site...

First things first. Handbrake on the Windows Platform does NOT decrypt Commercial DVDs. Let me repeat this. It does NOT decrypt commercial DVDs.
Third-party software is required for this part of the process. (e.g. AnyDVD, DVD43 or DVD Decryptor)

Fixed

It was a bios setting causing the bsod under heavy load. I've been using this computer for a year no issues but I guess nothing stresses a computer like video encoding lol. So I loaded the failsafe settings and it worked fine did a full 2 hour movie in 20minutes not to bad. Computer hardware and video encoding has come a longggg way I remember it used to take like 10 hours. I gotta encode it again I didn't know handbrake encodes subtitles in by default that's annoying lol.

I know it seems silly and I never said I liked it....

Just if you live in America and these are American DVDs then I'd recommend not doing it.

In a court in Aug '09 it was ruled that the copying of a disc itself is not unlawful and the resulting copy isn't illegal the software used to break the encryption or anti-copy stuff is deemed illegal and a felony....

Thank the DMCA lol... though when Clinton first signed it in it used to allow you to back up movies only if it was for back-up purposes and you kept it with you or the original. It also stated you could download movies offline for back-up if you own it... it's been amended now so that's all considered Piracy and if you rip DVDs that is a felony now cause of the software....

And practically all DVDs are except maybe old movies like Ernest ones etc... and you can tell if it's copy protected by when you insert it in your computer if you try to copy the files by browsing the folder and an error says you can't copy the files....

I think it's somewhat unfair... if they stated it to mean if you were found liable for piracy or have proof you're a pirate then that's one thing but if you are just making a back-up for your say iPod Touch.. you should be allowed too... now I can't back up all my anime and that lol....

Well complex vector apps, scientific stuff and intense 3D work can vex a machine far more than encoding.... but encoding I think is more common so for the normal person yes encoding seems to slow machines.... but really only if you use the h264 standards.... if you use XviD then no.... that doesn't require the power to work/process like h264.

The OP asked about software ... the moral or legal ramifications are well documented. I suggest letting it go at that.

Fine, whatever... I don't want a flame war or bashing just trying to give him a head's up so something bad doesn't happen to him.... cause you never know especially in America nowadays.....

I think it's unfair to make it seem like I'm the "bad guy" for just trying to give helpful advice.

**EDIT**

But to prevent this from becoming a big deal fine, I'll "drop it" or leave it at "that" lol. I just have friend who got in trouble for this and was trying to give a friendly warning and personally recommend just stay safe and don't do it cause hubris has a way of screwing you by blinding you...

Fair enough, and on that note it is worth mentioning that HandBrake can not break copy protection.

^^In the US though, so for those in Europe Rejoice :D (unless things have changed?).

OP if your going to encode on your PC use MeGUI it is 100 times better IMO.

.... and about 100 times less user friendly. It's powerful but only if you know what your doing. Handbrake for windows works fine but if the OP really wants to try something else then try RipBot264, just my opinion:)

Yeah well the corporate greed in America is off the charts lol.

And meGUI which I've used before in my own video work for encodes is amazing but only if you make your own AVISynth scripts and use the right ones...

Just cause AVISynth can have scripts written to produce better results than Handbrake doesn't mean it will. If you don't use the very few scripts that will produce better encodes then Handbrake is a better choice... and if you are working with HD such as blu-ray stuff it's progressive and not interlaced so HB will be an excellent encoder then... de-interlacing is pretty much where meGUI would outshine Handbrake as it has AVISynth with certain scripts that offer FAR betterr de-interlacing....

The codecs used to do the encoding matter too and meGUI doesn't necessarily use better than HB would.... so in closing meGUI has the potential and can be superior; sometimes by far, to Handbrake but not entirely.

Thanks for the replys guys! Yeah user friendliness is my #1 priority. In the past converting video has been a frustrating experience with codecs and error msgs and out of sync audio. This was bad at first with the bsod but now that I fixed that it's pretty much been the smoothing video encoding experience over ever had. I'm working on soft subs now which is a little more complicated dunno if I'm going to bother with it.

I use dvd shrink. It's simple, lets me choose what to include like which subtitles and such, the size, extras...

I didn't read your whole post, just the first one.
sorry if this is a repost.I hope it's what you are looking for.

edit: dvd shrink can't be downloaded from the site itself. google it, or download it from a torrent site. ( since this is a 100 % legal download ,I think I am alowed to mention torrents? )

Well what do you mean mentioning torrents?

Torrents and that way of downloading isn't illegal?

Sure stuff can be pirated on p2p/torrent; but it can be and has via direct downloading as well...

I know a lot that get scared if they mention torrents they'll be like arrested...

Just depends where you live and what you download via that network but a lot of companies support it cause it alleviates stress off their servers.

I know the way of downloading isn't illegal, but I once mentioned it here on this forum to someone as a way to download an application for free instead of paying, and some replied that this is against forum rules.

Well yeah that's piracy. If there is an app that you have to buy a license to use and you suggest getting it online for free and not buy the license it is. However, freeware; such as what Handbrake is, can't be pirated as it has no licensing to use it. Now, if the developer patented it then you can still break software laws if you redistribute it for profit and such.

Or if you suggest to just download the app via torrent and don't "crack" it and use the trial I think that's okay cause most, even pro apps offer trials so you can technically download w/o paying for a license but my peference in that case is to just get it from the dev. directly as you'd be safe legally speaking for sure cause laws change alot so maybe now the devs can still sue you if you get it via torrent even if you don't use the crack and crack it cause it isn't how they wanted you to get it in he first place. Unless the dev has a torrent link I'd just say be safe and get the trial off their site

I thought of DVD Shrink, too, but was trying to go with pure ripping software that didn't make any alterations. I think I found all of the apps I used to use on Windows at a site called Mr. Bass. Some of his stuff is out of date now, but I still go back to that site once in a while.
