The Holy Trinity. which falls? iPhone, iPad, MacBook

Yes some people can afford whatever, whenever, but I fear that the majority of people will only be able to justify buying two of the three devices in Apple's newly formed Holy Trinity

iPhone, iPad, MacBook.

If you could only have two, as may well be the case, which device would you drop?

---The way I see it, people NEED two good devices (consumerist society blah-blah people shh)
1) ultimate productivity (desktop, laptop)
2) ultimate portability (phone, mp3 player)

anything which falls outside these categories, as the iPad does, may be lovely but is not that important.
I think iPad will age nicely towards productivity.
I still lust one NOW

iPad though I want to buy a 64GB version. Because the iPad is more of a want than a need. If you have an iPhone and Macbook, you have no need for an iPad.

I personally have a 32GB 3GS and a 17" UMBP, which gives me no need for the iPad at all. But I'm buying it because it's aesthetically beautiful IMO.

They all have totally different purposes so I don't think the question makes a lot of sense. The Macbook especially is the odd one out because unlike the others, it's a proper computer. Your trinity may work better if you had iPod, iPhone, iPad.

edit: my bad, I thought you said if you could only have one. I agree with what MacDawg said in post 5.

and therein lies the present problem.
The iPad doesn't distinguish itself from its siblings enough to justify owning it as well.

But as restraints are loosened and features are added from this slow start, I think that iPad and the tablet market can only develop, grow, and prosper.

But each has its unique function, aesthetics and approach
It is nice to have the choice of 2 out of 3

I will eventually have all 3 'cause I am just geeky that way, along with an iPod

Apple doesn't need to sell all 3 to everyone for the iPad to be successful

There are plenty of people who don't want an iPhone and prefer the Droid/Verizon, but who might like to have an iPad with only WiFi

Personally, the answer is obvious. If you can only have two and two of the three require a MacBook for syncing, then that leaves the iPhone. It makes little sense to get an iPad when you cannot/will not get a Mac to sync it with.

In defending apple a bit, the target audience for the iPad isn't for people who only (either through budgetary constraints or desire) will get a Mac and an iPhone. Its for those folks who want an inbetween device to read books while commuting, and listen to music. Those who want to easily use a device in the living room without having to a laptop on their lap. This is where it makes the most sense.

I would sacrifice the macbook. I would have an iMac as my main work horse for doing more intensive tasks and the an iPad for lounging around casually browsing the internet, chatting on facebook etc.

Sorry if my messing with Christian metaphor upset you but Apple is just BEGGING for it! (although it's not coherent) Moses' Tablet, Jesus Phone, the new Holy Trinity... Apple! Forbidden, fatal fruit of the fall!

Out of the three, the only ones which you could drop would be between the iPhone and iPad. You still need a computer to sync either one with. And between them, I need a phone more than I need a big email checking, internet surfing and ebook reading... thing.

My hope was to sacrifice my MacBook and get by with an iMac and iPad but the iPad is too limiting. Let's see what jailbreaking brings.

I don't think any will fall but I could see some logic in them offering a 15" plastic MacBook now it will probably spend more time on your desk and less time in your backpack.

I own both an iPhone and a MacBook and will probably eventually purchase the iPad. If I had to sacrifice one, it would be the MacBook because I'd have a Mac mini or an iMac to sync it to. Most of the things that I use my MacBook for outside of home/work can be accomplished with the iPad.
