Ok guys here's the story from A-Z

I just received a second hand iPhone 2G. It used to be jailbroken, but the owner accidentally updated to 2.2.1 and it is now screwed up.

It doesn't have the original Sim card anymore. Which means whenever i connect it to iTunes i get a message along the lines of: 'the sim card inserted in this iphone does not appear to be supported'

I thought it would be a case of just putting it into dfu mode, restoring by option-clicking and choosing an ipsw that i used for my previous iPhone (which contained the custom 2.2 FW i made with Pwnage Tool).

However, every time i tried to restore i got error-21. After a lot of research i found out that you had to delete all traces of iTunes and re-instal it. (I also installed an old version, 7.7) (http://www.modmyi.com/forums/general/433201-problems-dfu-itunes-8-0-2-error-21-fw-2-2-a.html)

I did this. No luck.

I don't have the original Sim card, and the main problem is getting rid of the error-21.

So please, help!
 
QuickPwn is no good... For some reason it doesn't detect the iPhone when i put it in.

I was thinking that using a different computer might get past the error-21 problem. So tomorrow am gonna take the ipsw and iPhone and try it on the school Macs.

Okay, tell us how it goes.

I wish my school would get some Macs... Or at least let me put Linux on my user account :( Stupid crappy school.
 
The baseband was updated with the update to 2.2.1. That is why you couldn't restore to 2.2. You will need to create an ipsw for 2.2.1 in Pwnage Tool.

If the iPhone is 2G, assuming thats edge, the baseband doesn't get updated. If it's 3G (2nd generation), then it did get updated.

Either way, are you running this on a mac with 10.5.6 installed? That could be the reason why it wouldn't go to DFU mode.
To fix it, you just need to buy a USB 2.0 powered up. (or edit your kext files, which i DONT recommend and it screwed up my laptop).
 
Try plugging a USB hub into the port on your computer, and then plug the phone into that. try running it through the hub and it might work.......i was having the same problem, then i read this somewhere and it worked the first time......

My attempt on the school computers didn't go too well. iTunes is blocked on all the student computers, so i went at break on the teacher's computer but had no luck there either.

My friend also told me that changing USB ports and using a USB hub could work. So i will try that.

How do you go into DFU mode correctly? I did what it said on most sites and i got the iTunes message on the phone, so i'm guessing i went into recovery mode instead?

They way I enter DFU mode is the following
  1. Turn the device off, and disconnect it.
  2. Push and hold the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons, as you plug the device into your computer
  3. Keep holding the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons for a further 10 seconds
  4. Release the Sleep/Wake button, but continue to hold the Home button for 10 more seconds
The screen should be black, and the phone should be totally unresponsive. iTunes will say it has detected an iPod in recovery mode, and will prompt you to restore it.
 
Ok cool. I just got a message from my friend that he managed to fix it so it's all good. Am not sure what he did, so when i find out i'll post it in case anyone has had the same problem. Although my best guess is that it was just the computer....

Solution:

Try a different computer. If you're getting errors on iTunes, chances are that simply using a different computer, or even a different USB drive, will work.
