Will the 'Genius's' at my local Apple store know if I have unscrewed and removed the base plate from my Macbook pro even if I have not changed any spec? Thanks.

I think they will know - it's hard to get the screws off without leaving a telltale sign. I don't think they will care. I've had the back off all of our MBAs and MBPs (9 in the last 10 years). They been fixed by Apple and others, in and out of warranty.
