The iPad and cooking.

I did a small dinner party last night and it had been awhile since I had done any serious cooking. I can't believe how valuable having the iPad was. Using Epicurious and the Internet, I was constantly looking things up, even though I had the printed recipes I was using for the dinner. Example, if you don't like how a sauce is turning out that the recipe calls for, you can quickly find a new one. If you find something odd about the recipe you, like the temperature or cooking time seem off, you can quickly cross reference other like recipes to see what they call for.

I have the Apple case which the cover turns over and places the iPad at an angle for easier typing. Plus it wipes clean with a sponge. If this thing was invented for nothing more than cooking, it would be a great invention. I love it. :)
 
I agree. The Epicurious app is really impressive considering that it's free and (correct me if I'm wrong) still not beset with ads. I also like that the recipes in it are generally from published/professional sources, so you're not just finding a bunch of random "can of cream of mushroom soup and a can of refrigerator biscuits" type internet recipes when you're actually looking for, say, beef wellington. :)

Once MacGourmet gets their app updated for iPad, this'll be pretty much perfect. (For those with JB iPads: If you use the FullForce app, it makes the MacGourmet iPhone app look MUCH better on the iPad for now.)
 
I use Epicurious and Big Oven Pro on my iPad. Will add MacGourmet when the iPad version is available. I have MacGoumet on my iPhone and really like it. Great for those occasions when I need to access a recipe at the grocery store because I forgot to do the shopping list thing ;)
 
For what it's worth, the Epicurious iPhone app is not bad either, but it has a lot of ads. (I keep wondering when they'll get added to the iPad app.)

Mark Bittman and Nigella Lawson also have little cooking iPhone apps that I'd love to see come to the iPad. Nigella's in particular came out about a week after the iPad so I wish they'd have held off. :)
 
I can't get the site's video to work on the iPad,at least not on Atomic.

Mostly came to mention that epicurious's featured recipes have been updated.

I also use the first two but have not heard of MacGourmet. Will go look now.
I esp like Epicurious. Using it more than I thought I would. Search is slightly weird but manageable.

EDIT: Use them on both iPhone and iPad. On the phone on the way home and iPad on the counter top.
 
I have a better way...

Take the iPad to the couch, have the woman bring you a cold one. Then tell her to get back to the kitchen and make her man some dinner!

Much better use of the iPad.
 
My wife has been interested in getting one just for this reason. The problem I've found is that I can't seem to find an app that would allow her to enter her own recipes. I guess I could do it through a .pdf import or something, but an app would be so much cooler.

Does anyone know of an app that would work for her?

BigOven allows you to enter your own recipes online, but you have to do it manually, I don't think there is any way to import them.

If you're on OSX, MacGourmet will do this, but there are some caveats coming in a sec. :) You can enter your recipes into the desktop app either by hand or through a variety of import techniques. One of the coolest features is the ability for the app to automagically import recipes from FoodTV, allrecipes, and other well known cooking sites. I've used this a lot and it's very clean, and the author keeps the app updated when the sites changes. You can then sync your recipe database to your iDevice:

Caveat: right now the mobile app is iPhone only, so it looks pretty bad on the iPad.

Caveat 2: The author claims to be working on an iPad app, but has not mentioned it since March 23.

Caveat 3: If your iPad is jailbroken, you can use the the Fullforce app to make the MacGourmet iPhone app look MUCH better (Fullforce uses a different method than the "2X" button.)

I contacted Advenio a few days ago and got the following response:

"There will be an iPad app, but there is no release date set for it yet. The release will be some time after the next major update to MacGourmet, which is what I'm working on right now.

I saw a post recently that recommended Bento for entering your own recipes. It was said to have a cool recipe template. I haven't used Bento for anything, but I thought it worth mentioning as a place to look.

I use Bento on the Mac for storing recipes. One cool feature is the ability to embed video into the database, so videos I have downloaded (from online cooking shows) get included along with the ingredients and instructions.

The downside is that on my iPhone, I cant use that database because I don't have enough storage space to handle the video content. This may be possible on the iPad, I'm not sure yet.... I get mine (A 64GB 3G) on Friday.

Bento for the iPad will be one of my early App purchases.

I downloaded the free version, but can't seem to find the section where I can enter my own. Does that have to be done through the BigOven section where I have to log-in? I didn't create an account yet, so I couldn't go further than the log-in screen.

If I remember correctly, you actually have to do it online, via their website and not within the app itself.
