The iPad is a full computer that runs OS X

Complaints I have heard so far are that:

It it just the iPhone OS, not a full computer running OS X and all sorts of desktop apps.

It doesn't have enough HDD space. 64GB, my library is bigger than that.

There are others, camera, flash, etc.

But think about this.

1. You are not supposed to carry your entire media library with you at all times. I have 400GB of movies alone. I don't need them all at my fingertips at all times wherever I go.

2. And this is one under a lot of people's radar. Go to the App Store and check out Jaadu VNC. It is an App that allows you to control your desktop or laptop computer once configured with your iPhone. Now imagine this App redone for the iPad. (Apple may even do one themselves). Imagine being able to essentially log into your iMac or MacPro or laptop from anywhere, whether it is the couch or elsewhere and control your desktop, have access to all your files, but not have to store all that content on your iPad. If Jaadu VNC gets rewritten to take advantage of the iPad screen size and other features, then I don't really need a laptop.

I've had Jaadu since it came out, before they renamed it Jaadu. While I pretty much agree with you, you specifically mention all your videos and you can't watch them on an iPhone or iPad via Jaadu. Technically they will play, but I've tested this both on 3G and wifi. The refresh rate, even when manually set to the highest setting is not a good experience at all on wifi, let alone 3G. Tethered video on these devices is just not feasible to a degree where you can enjoy it.

I realize that was confusing. I would sync a collection of movies b/c I don't think I really need my whole library at my disposal which is why the HDD size is not a big deal.

The point of Jaadu would be to have access to all my other desktop apps and files. For example something like Quicken comes to mind, but lots of others too. I wouldn't want to try streaming video to my iPad or even music which could be done through Simplify.

Sigh. The OP obviously does not realize the limitations of VNC/RDP/Citrix, etc, etc. While these technologies do have some great uses, there are many, many limitations when it comes to any kind of AV media.

Again you misunderstand. I have no problem syncing to an iPad and changing what is synced when I want new music, video, etc variety as I do not need access to my library at once. In truth when I am at home I would probably often use the iPad as I expect Apple will redo it's remote App to be even better to control my iMac library playing through my stereo as it uses my Apple TV as an AirTunes speaker or controlling the Apple TV directly as it can. I have no desire to use a VNC App to run AV media. I would use that when I wanted to run a specific, but not high performance app off my iMac or access a file of doc (non media) and manipulate it without going to the iMac or when away from home. I think it is in this capacity that the iPad will be extraordinary. In addition I see that developers will truly have a new boon and make much more exciting and dynamic apps for the iPad harnessing it's power and real estate.

I think the OP has a good point. I've never used this app on my iphone, because.. well the screen's so small I don't see the point. But I could definitely see the merit in wanting to run full OS X on an iPad (for very limited, specific uses).

This confirms my desire even more to gradually move from the iphone/macbook combo that i currently have to an iphone/ipad/imac combo over the next 1-2 years

If I wanted full OS X, I would just lug around my laptop. It would take even longer to boot OS X on the iPad, so what's the point. The point of the iPad is for media consumption and design. Of course 3rd party developers will eek out way more than media and design, but it's not meant as a laptop replacement.

I too hope to do way more with the iPad than it's intention, but it's unrealistic for it to be an OS X machine.

In the future, with the accelerated improvement of chip design, we may well see a tablet running OS X, but that just isn't realistic at this point.

The iPad is a new category, not a replacement, and we have to accept this.

The iPad browser is no better than the iPhone browser - only larger. Too bad it cuts out 50% of the sites I view. So, in my eyes the iPad is a pot device for web browsing.

ESPN has an iPhone app.... Don't worry about that.

I have a feeling that we'll see Flash by the time it ships. There is always the possibility that Apple could be working on a type of "wrapper" that can efficiently decode flash for playback.

I understand that flash is a hot debate and I can't say that I do or don't think it is a problem. Likewise with the coming of HTML5 and H.264 video on the web, it may be the dino in the room somewhat soon. That really wasn't the point of this thread. But I will say one thing about ESPN for example. I hate that when I go to ESPN and click on NFL or NBA or NHL home page or go to a recap page of a game or what not, that the flash highlights or interview video or whatever plays automatically. I would much rather see it play upon command without me having to stop it. Maybe it is a config issue that I can turn off and am not aware of though I thought I have tried before. I do see that with the iPad like the Time mag demo a few weeks ago that I would expect at some point all web, iBook, magazine and other video will embed in a QT like format that gives us the option to play it upon command and scale it out to full screen in a cool Apple like way, and that it might not be here now but it won't be that far off. Right now the web isn't geared for that, but hopefully it will head that direction. But personally I don't care for all the auto playing flash video and ads on the web.

Over a dozen RDP/VNC/X apps in the App store

If you want a virtualized desktop, there are over a dozen RDP/VNC/X11 type apps in the App store.

Several are even Free apps.

Won't work for media/animation/etc., but for everything else (multitask multiple chat clients, software development, running some Windows app in VMWare, browsing photos on a non-video Flash site, etc.) this should work just fine.

well, although the application sounds interesting its still not enough for me to get the iPad. I was hoping that the tablet would be touchscreen but also with the option of using pen like wacom. That way I would love to get zbrush, photoshop and maya and do some basic drawing, sculpting or animation. I would love to take this thing to bed and draw or sculpt as it would be awesome. Something I can't do with my laptop and wacom tablet right now ( try putting wacom and laptop in bed and use it )) )

If they would come up with a way that I would be able to have maya (even light version), zbrush and photoshop then it would be great for artists and I would certainly get it. As for now, the iPad just don't make any sense as it has nothing to offer for my needs.
Its a real shame but I hope Apple will learn and offer it in the future.

Apple tries to offer a lot of features to a lot of people, but the ability to draw in bed other than something like the brushes demo shown in the keynote isn't at the heart of the most features for the most people. You are talking about a very particular use for a select group and if that means that some of that group opts not to buy it because of a lack of that feature, then Apple will certainly live with that, but there isn't anything for them to learn there.

Well, you are right in certain aspects. I know that Apple changed and they are now more into mass market and therefor a wide audience but I don't see anything wrong with a small focus for artists or professionals that wish to use it to the full potential.
Think about this: If Apple released an option of iPad with open OS X that would allow you to install application then how many people do you think would buy it on top of those consumers that are happy with closed OS? I think they would gain a lot of customers because of that. Adding a touch pen as an option to buy would be a HUGE plus to lot of artists and would certainly benefit both sides.

Yes, one might say that Apple chose this way and thats it but I feel that it would be way nicer to give us an option. I would gladly pay $1000 for the same device with open OS X and a "wacom like" pen as optional.

I'm sure others would do too.

There are currently at least one or two third party stylus pens available for the iPhone/iPod Touch that would presumably work with the iPad as well I am sure there will be apps available in the App store specific to drawing on the iPad in addition to the limited apps that do a rudimentary job of drawing on the iPhone's small screen. However, one inherent difficulty that the iPad may present is accuracy. I am not versed in how minute the input spaces are in the touchscreen, but it is designed to accept finger point input and gestures. Drawing with a stylus requires a greater degree of accuracy that the matrix to the touchscreen may or may not be fine enough to translate the input of stylus for the needs of creative applications. Likewise, increasing the matrix to such a degree necessary to accommodate stylus input for sketching may not be cost effective at this time.

Good point. This is the exact reason why I bought the 16GB iPhone not the 32GB. Because the 16GB holds two full blown GPS apps, plus more media than i could possibly watch on a single charge.
