The rumored iPhone 12 5.4inch will be the iPhone SE Plus.

It will have a smaller notch because it doesn’t have FaceID. This iPhone will instead use TouchID on the power button like the new iPad Air.

Maybe.

Update: disregard what I said above. I read wrong about the rumor of the screen protector with a notch cutout being listed as "for iPhone SE Plus" a couple weeks ago. I missed the part where this screen protector had the dimensions of the 8 Plus.

The rumoured starting/base price for the 5.4" is $699-$729 which would put it in the same bracket as the current iPhone 11 which has a bigger screen and FaceID (seen as an upgrade over TouchID). The only 'upgrade' would the OLED display over LCD.

I can't see it myself, but you could be right if the notch is smaller.

Doubt it, but would buy the 12 Mini with Touch ID in an instant!

I think Apple will hold onto the SE with a button form as long as they can. I think they’re getting close to making their line up a lot less confusing. But it is Apple, and I’m waiting for the 9 to pop up out of nowhere 😂

Couldn't think of anything worse than TID in the power button, if my 11 iPad pro in a folio had it would be a PTIA, would never buy a Air 4 or any iPhone with it.

Holy crap! Why until now have I not thought of that or seen this posted anywhere else? I always use a case whether on phone or iPad, so that feature would be completely worthless. Thanks for pointing this out. Was one reason I was gonna wait for 12, but nope, not interested. 👍

Hopefully not. While I'm interested in the 5.4" iPhone 12 for myself, I would like at least one more "Plus" version for my mom. Seeing her try to use my iPad Pro 11" that doesn't have a home button and failing miserably I ended up getting her the Air 3 to replace her Air 2 instead. I don't want to even try an iPhone without a home button and her iPhone 6 Plus is getting long in the tooth even with her limited usage of it and her eyes can't handle the 2020 SE.

Cases designed for the new TouchID device would obviously have a cut out to accommodate the new location same as there are holes for speakers, USB-C/Lightning port, etc.

Yea, I mean, it could work and I’m sure Apple would design a nice overpriced case that would look good. But I don’t know. I haven’t even looked at the new Air cases yet.

Just looked. The Otterbox Cases for the Air has a good cutout. Doesn’t look bad. Other buttons are covered.

I think the SE Plus will be exactly that a PLUS model...

If we’re being honest the viewing area on the 5.4” iPhone is going to be closer than the iPhone 5/5s than an iPhone 6/6s/7/8 Plus. Similar to how the viewing area on the 5.8” is closer to the 6/6s/7/8/SE than it is a plus model.

While the screen is “bigger” the aspect ratio and notch comes into play and I’m thinking it will be possible that a 4.7” iPhone shows “more” content than the 5.4” model.

After saying all that I’m gonna say that the 5.4” iPhone 12 and the 6.1” iPhone 12Pro are the 2 models I’m mostly interested in.

A smaller phone than the current SE is going to be the next SE plus size? That is not happening.

Yeah this is how I feel. The overall design is smaller even. I just couldn’t see them making it the Plus model of the “budget device” when the SE 2020 uses TouchID home button the most.

I know OP is being hypothetical and it’s not a terrible idea. I just can’t see it being an “Apple Idea” persay

With the release of the Air 4, I’m actually wondering if Apple would make the SE Plus either a notchless 6.1” XR or 12 with TouchID power button. Gotta say, I’d be all over something like that in 5.4” chassis.

You and me both. I’d be on that very quickly. Would love it honestly. I’ve never understood why Apple went to only FaceID. Most other phones do have at least 2 biometric features... IDK why Apple banked everything on FaceID when TouchID was only released in 2013??

Still doesn’t make sense to me to this day.

The accessory market has supplied gazillions of cases for iPhones with Touch ID. They’ll do the same for that iPad.
