I read it at engadget and gizmodo too.

They aren't "devs", since they don't develop any web app as apple allowed, they are hackers. But I do like what they have done. They actually "opened" the iphone.

hmm i wonder when they will release a tool. I understand the faq thing posted on their wiki but am somewhat scared of bricking my phone....

well they are developing quite a few of their own applications. Latest for example,

I have started a project to create a high-quality ARM assembler tailored for the iPhone. This is our last major hurdle to overcome in order to write programs for the phone. We know how to produce the assembler code in the correct way, thanks to some insider information helpfully provided to us. I've created a project page for this undertaking, which already features a working cross-GDB. Any help would be much appreciated.

When they have finished all of their goals they will work on polishing what they have, thus making it more user friendly.

For the time being you can use iPhoneInterface although I think that requires some modding of the iPod connector socket on the bottom the the phone.
