I am really impressed with this beta, ever since the 3.0 beta my 3G has been running extremely slow, lots of jittery transitions and such, when the official 3.0 came out it only made mild improvements to that speed. But with the iPhone OS 4.0 beta, I am noticing transitions that I haven't seen since before 3.0, maybe that's because its easier thanks to the folders or something, but I am just really impressed at how speedy it is. I have had my share of crashes and bugs though, so its not perfect yet, but overall I am very impressed.

I agree. The speed is incredible so I know with new hardware this thing is really gonna scream!

Thats because you restored your phone, it always seems very fast right after a restore.

I still have the original iPhone, so my phone has been chugging since the 3.0 update. I can't wait until I get a new phone that can run well. And can multitask! :p

I'm noticing a bit of zippiness as well. I'm not sure if it's a more streamlines OS or if they've tweaked the animations to appear zippier. The illusions of speed is still a big thing, all things considered.

I did an update, not a restore, and it's much faster for me on a 3GS. I was hesitant to do an update since I know they can cause problems going from a release version to a beta version, but it's been working great.

I wonder how fast it'd be if I did a restore...

I restored one 3GS on Wednesday to 3.1.2. Clean. No backup. I was getting rid of a bad jailbreak.

I restored another 3GS to 4.0 yesterday. Again, didn't restore from any backup.

4.0 is blazing fast, especially for a first beta. Animations stutter every now and then but the phone does things faster. The camera opens quicker. Camera shutter is much much quicker. YouTube is much faster. Switching webpages in Safari is either faster or smoother.

In summary, it's faster (and smoother, except for the occasional beta-ness).

I've restored my phone many times, (unsuccessful jailbreaks and other reasons), and it has not run this smoothly since pre 3.0. Though as great as it is, it doesn't matter much to me, I plan on getting the 4th gen iPhone the second its announced.

please tell me you where being sarcastic. otherwise, you're in for some though news :( .... first gen and 3G won't multitask

I have to admit the 4.0 beta is extremely fast on my 3GS and someone working with me on a new application (development started the minute they finally confirmed multitasking) noted it is a lot faster than 3.1.3 on his 3G.

Apple might have optimized the OS a lot more than we realize, but other than the occasional bug or app crash the 4.0 OS is vastly superior to 3.1.3 even in beta.

It's lickety-split on my 3G iPod touch but I won't be putting it on my iPhone (because, you know, I might need it to work and this is still BETA software).

Anyone got any performance reports for the iPhone 3G? Even if it's a bit quicker than 3.1.3 (all of the 3.x releases have felt a bit laggy and buggy on my phone) then that would be sweet.

IMO this feels faster than 3.1.3 on my 3G, even after I did a restore a few weeks back because the device was running sluggish.

Some animations are new, but it feels fast, even with all my apps installed.

Yeah, I put it on. Been working great, then when I tried to log onto our nocc portal via safari it crashed. Can't keep safari going long enough to even look at the debug console.

I must agree that my 3GS is much quicker with 4.0. Very smooth and Ive only had safari crash once. And I have been running it all day. The most amazing improvement for me so far has been the instant satellite lock I now get whenever I start CoPilot Live. Where inthe past OS versions, I had to wait for upto a minute to lock on to a satellite, it now takes 2 seconds indoors.

Apple has done an excellent job with 4.0 and quite incredible for a first beta.

4.0 Beta on a 3G is dog slow

Ok, I must be the minority here. I have installed 4.0 on my 3G and it takes 15 seconds to just get to the main screen after entering in my passcode.

I do have over 11 pages of applications, but it is very SLOW.

Try to reset your network settings. There appears to be some latency when switching from 3G to WIFI, but that partially fixes it from what I've seen.
