Ever since iOS 7, I have missed that satisfying animation of the keyboard rotating at a silky smooth 60 fps on my iPhone 5. The only devices that I know of that can do a 60 fps keyboard rotation are the iPhone 6 and iPad air 2 on iOS 8, no other device on iOS 8 can seem to do this.

So far, no improvement on iOS 9 beta 1 for any of the animations on my iPhone 5 or my iPad mini 2.

Do you think they will ever fix this in iOS 9 for all devices?

With performance improvements being one of the focuses for iOS 9, it's possible you could see less dropped frames when it comes to the keyboard rotation, but then again the iPhone 5 has an A6 chip so it's more likely you'll see it on the mini 2.

Are you serious? I’m running iOS 9 beta 5 on my iPhone 5, but its still dropping so many frames.

ive worked how many 4S's now...every single one is fast & smooth with ios 9 so..i did "fix" one 5S user complaining "ios 9 is slow" bla bla, took about 40 seconds to find the problem, as most typical users do, he had background refresh on, FOR ALMOST EVERY SINGLE APP..turned that crap off, its like he got a new phone instantly.

I agree with the OP, a girl once landed me her iphone 5 and the keyboard rotation animation wasn't 60 fps on ios 8 but it was ok. My 5s on the other hand is silky smooth on ios 8 but guess what? The keyboard animation lags on ios 9 just as much as the iphone 5 on ios 8. So... THANKS OBAMA!

Mines choppy on my Plus with latest dev. Background refresh is off for all but a couple apps. Oh well! I hate the landscape keyboard on the Plus, anyway.

FIY, background refresh only happens when you have no App on the foreground (i.e. phone locked, or in the springboard), when you open an App, background refresh is paused.

To @op, it's the same as in iOS 6, except that now Apps are more complex, mainly, using AutoLayout.

I bet you also told him to swipe his apps after use and download more RAM.

My iPhone 6 can't even consistently get it right on iOS 9. Or control center. Or spotlight. Or opening or closing apps. Or entering or exiting the app switcher. Or scrolling through the app switcher.

By the way, the iPad has tons and tons and tons more pixels to push. So, I think iPhone 5 is more likely to be smooth. After all, the keyboard never rotated smoothly on the mini 2, even on all versions of iOS 7. Control center was never smooth over the lock screen, folders, or the keyboard. Neither was the Siri animation. Everything else was perfect on the iPhone 5 all the way through iOS 7. So, if anything gets a smoothly rotating keyboard, it's the iPhone 5. However, I'm not betting on anything getting it, quite frankly.

We're talking about different generations of chips though and software being optimized more on certain devices

Oh, is that a new app layout api? Was it introduced with iOS 7? If that's the problem, then Apple needs to optimize it for performance cause I'm sick of the non-60 fps animations in iOS 7, 8, and 9.

My iPhone 6 Plus on the current beta is far from smooth with most transitions especially keyboard rotation. For example, upon rotating device it takes at least a second to respond and then when it does it show a couple frames both appears to mostly jump from one orientation to another. Hopefully the GM will be better

It may also be due to poorly programmed Apps...

I've given up and disabled transparency in my iPhone 5. GUI was really smooth on iOS versions up to 8 but 9 stutters very much on many things (mainly app switcher). It's rather good and smooth with transparency off. Not great, but whatever.

You're comparing finished software vs pre release. Pre release has extra things running in the background.

Exactly.

Release software includes compiler optimizations, whole module optimizations, etc... that pre-release lacks, for better debug capabilities.

iPhone 5 has always been smoother than my iPad mini 2. Always. Right out of the box my iPad mini 2 was stuck in an odd place between iPhone 4S and iPhone 5 in smoothness. Speedier than the iPhones, but graphically, it's choking in terms of UI performance. So many more pixels to push with real-time Gaussian blur effects, buggier and less optimized UI, etc. Chip generation does not matter here, mostly because we aren't comparing the same devices, it's iPhone vs iPad, iPhone has much less to deal with.

what..? force close an app every time ur done using it? no, 99% of users already do that & its POINTLESS, questionably juicing the battery more every time the app has to fully reload everything into ram..

but i guess someone like u would think u can "download more ram"

Yea, I know. But in 7 years I'm on iOS, there was NEVER a big difference between later betas and final release. Ever. If it stutters, it will stutter, sorry.

For the time in between beta 5 and the GM next week, there better be a significant improvement in performance.

The battery benefits only last so long. Most apps can only "ask" the OS to run in the background for 15 minutes to finish any task before going into suspended state. If you're using other apps during or after that time, depending on how many or what you use will more than likely boot that older app out of ram. They would have to fully reload the app once that happens regardless of being in the app switcher and negate all those battery benefits everyone keeps saying over and over.

Removing apps from the switcher that you do not use very often (multiple times an hour or even at least once an hour on the hour) saves you from the potential of apps getting stuck or hung on some random process in the background without knowing it. When that happens performance and battery suffer more and gets blamed on the OS itself as being terrible and poorly optimized.

Facebook is very bad for this. The new Music app has been known to also cause issues of massive stutter and lag when left in the switcher (that suddenly disappear when you fully close it.) Who knows how many other apps cause issues out of the 1.5+ million apps available in the same way.
