The lack of apps with split/screen and picture in picture is ridiculous.

The two most exciting iPad features of iOS 9 to me were split/screen and picture in picture, and the number of major apps still not supporting these features a week after iOS 9 came out is ridiculous.

Of all the major apps I use the only one updated for these features so far is Twitter.

Apps like Facebook, Youtube, CNN, Watch ESPN, HBO Go, Netflix, Twitch, etc. None of them are updated, and keep in mind developers have had access to these features in their development kits for months now. They didn't just get iOS 9 last week, like everyone else.

I don't understand what the hold up is.

Same here. On my iPad, just Twitter has updated. Waiting for more split screen apps myself.

It'll happen. But the use case is relatively small, so likely does not get higher priority over more impactful projects.

Lazy developers. Some major apps only getting iPhone 6 support recently should tell you all you need to know. Remember the cool eBay widget they showed off last year for iOS 8? Yeah still waiting for that.

If I remember correctly. Facebook was used to demo quick reply from the notification bar. And some of these apps like Facebook have yet to enable this feature. I just now noticed that Twitter can now do this. And that was when iOS 8 was on demo. So my point is that should show you how long some developers take to update their apps.

Just playing Devil's Advocate, but if you were a developer and people have already paid for (and been happy with) your app for some time, and now a new option comes along which only a small-ish % of users will even have the ability to use, why would you bother investing the effort/time implementing this feature, given that the potential reward might only come from new users, only a fraction of whom might have a supported device.

Unless they add it to the existing app and make it an in-app purchase to unlock?

I can understand everyones frustration, especially with PIP video. But theres something to realize with split screen apps. The apps have to be built using Apple's size classes and frameworks for all the different screen sizes. (Something they made much easier to do since iOS 8). The problem is apps like netflix etc. are quite obviously VERY different in design. Not to mention there has been a lot of neglect for properly making iPad apps that are updated to the damn look of iOS 7/8/9 let alone the proper implementation of size classes.

So I wouldn't get your hopes up anytime soon for many of your favorite apps to be updated. It sucks. And I hope I'm wrong.

iPads have gotten a lot of neglect until this year with software. Hell, LinkedIn and a few other apps still have NON RETINA graphics in certain areas. Its a freaking joke.

We have an issue to deal with as this gets going anyhow. The more apps that are able to be used with split screen the more we will have to scroll icons that should be in a list format instead. Imagine we get to the point of 30 or 50+ in the list and we're still looking at icons with too much spacing. Lets hope a better list method is developed before app developers jump fully on the wagon.
