On this week's episode of The MacRumors Show, we discuss the new 24- and 32-inch iMac models that Apple is rumored to launch starting this year.

Later this year, Apple is expected to refresh the 24-inch iMac. The update is set to focus on the M3 chip, with no other major changes rumored, likely owing to the complete redesign that the current machine received upon its introduction in April 2021. This means that the iMac is set to be the only Mac product line to skip the M2 generation of chips entirely.

The 24-inch iMac could be among the first Macs to get the M3 chip, which should offer major performance and efficiency improvements over the M1 and M2 chips due to Apple's transition from TSMC's 5nm processes to a 3nm node. A refreshed selection of color options is also not out of the question.

An iMac with a 32-inch display – the same size as the Pro Display XDR – is also in development, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. It is expected to feature the M3 Pro and M3 Max chips, and appears to be positioned as a successor to the iMac Pro or the high-end 27-inch iMac. This new high-end desktop iMac is not expected to launch until late 2024 or sometime in 2025.

I told myself I'd not buy another iMac, but I could see myself using a 32" iMac, particularly if it had 6K resolution. Although I'd have to find something creative to do with one of my Studio Displays (unless of course I could connect both to a theoretical M3 Pro iMac...).

27" is already too big for many desks. You need serious depth/distance to make 32" work.

I honestly hope they offer 27" which is already on the big end for most desks. I specifically had to buy a desk with enough depth for my 27" iMac. Otherwise your eyes and head get toast within a day.

Four boring colors at most. The 24" only has seven colors, because there’s only one type of chip. The 32" will likely come in Pro and Max variants with a lot of upgrades to choose from, so they won’t make them in many different colors.
What does the type of chip have to do with external color choices?

No reason not to have 24", 27" and 32"

Keeping Apple's lineup simple and easy to understand isn't a reason to have only two sizes. That ship sailed.

One thing to keep in mind is the old iMac's massive bezels. A 32" iMac may not take much more footprint. For example, the 24" iMac is only physically 0.7 inches wider than the old 21.5" iMac. There is also the possibility that the exact screen could actually be smaller, like how the 24" iMac is really 23.5".

you think products coming out are slow now. just wait until all the M3 products come out.

I guarantee you Apple will struggle and may not come out with 2nm chips for a long long time.

IBM has a 2nm prototype made and working. 2021 . but it took a hell of alot to produce just that 1 chip.

Nothing of course :)

I expect Apple will offer magnetic covers in a variety of colors that you can purchase to cover the glossy white bezels on your 32” iMac.

This iMac design looks like a generic "computer" one might see in a movie. Jobs talked about making Apple products "sexy" again. Let's see some of that spirit brought back.

The previous gen was gorgeous with sweeping, curved lines in the back, the beautiful metal and black contrast in the front, and, of course, that wonderful Apple logo front and center. That logo is an important part of the aesthetic.

The Fisher-Price Candylane iMacs have the logo in the back as if anyone who isn't in a corporate setting sets their computer up in the middle of the room. Every time I see Apple's promo images, I'm like, "Who works like that?"

So, yeah. I hate the current iMac design. Can't believe I'm alone in that. Have never seen such a step back in design from one gen to the next.

Does that mean this add will go away?

From my perspective the elephant in the room regarding the A17/M3 SOC is the yield rates for the N3B lithography process.

According to reports it's still at around the 55% mark for the A17 Bionic and theirs talk for the M3 to be later moved to the N3E lithography process.

From what I understand is if they move the M3 to the N3E lithography process. Then the efficiency gains of this new chip decreases through the more simplified process.

Which could mean the M3 efficiency advances on the M2 chip will be smaller despite it being 3nm.

I would buy a 32" iMac Pro in a second...although I shutter to think of the price.

What I think is more needed is a larger, consumer M-based iMac. I have several family members that would upgrade form their 27" intel iMacs if that occurred.

Pros can handle separate displays/Mac Studios etc...and might prefer it.

I also think Apple released the Studio Display instead of the iMac because so many people are also attaching to MacBooks.
