On this week's episode of The MacRumors Show, we discuss the new iPad mini 7, Apple Intelligence and Genmoji, and the chances of an October Apple event to introduce M4 Macs.

Apple this week announced the seventh-generation iPad mini. Key upgrades include the A17 Pro chip, Smart HDR 4 and a new True Tone flash, a faster USB-C port, Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil hover support, a 512GB storage option, and support for Apple Intelligence. We discuss our initial thoughts on the product refresh, the significance of the upgrades, and who should consider buying the new device.

With Apple Intelligence being a tentpole feature of the new iPad mini, we ponder on whether Genmoji will actually be a popular feature among users when it eventually debuts. Finally, with the first of Apple's October product releases taking place via press release, we appraise whether the next expected products, which include new MacBook Pro, iMac, and Mac mini models, will follow suit. Until now, reports suggested that there would be an October Apple event to unveil the new devices before their debut in early November.

This was a bit of a strange episode. You fell back into the color and naming issues again, but I guess when we only get a press release for an Ipad, that's where the conversation inevitably goes. I enjoyed the conversation though, even though I agree that Apple should look at it's naming of products and reevaluate how they do it, considering how thinner even the pro models are getting now. I never understood the Air name either. Air of what?

As for the event, they should do a mac event and tie the Apple TV into it. With Silo and Severance coming back, this is a big couple of months for the service and now is the time to release a new Apple TV.

A proposal for a cleanup in Apple product names.

  • iPhone SE
  • iPhone (Number) / Plus
  • iPhone Pro / Pro Max (No need for numbers, the old Pro's always expire when the new one arrives anyway. Previous Pro models can then be referred to by year, iPhone Pro 2022. This year's new Pro can be referred to as "The new iPhone Pro" Maybe there should only be a Pro every two years. There are no big changes from 15 Pro to 16 Pro. 15 Pro could easily be the top model for another year.)

  • iPad SE (Formerly iPad x.gen)
  • iPad (Formerly iPad Air)

Apple is on the right track with their watches:

I enjoyed the conversation though
Yeah these two are a good pair, like two different generations of Apple users talking, they even look a lot like father and son with coincidentally similar facial features. I can see why MacRumors seems to be choosing these two as the face of the site. Even saw him on Al Jazeera English being interviewed, so he is literally the face of MacRumors to millions of people now.

I was disappointed with the update but I am excited to have a mini again. I had the mini 6 (and the original mini) and I really missed the form factor.

I still have my 13 inch pro because it serves a completely different purpose for me (work mainly, certain art apps, etc) but will be so excited to have the mini again for traveling, reading, and doodling on the couch.

I can't recall where I saw this, but an Apple Store employee said the iPad Mini appeals to a small, dedicated niche of users who absolutely love them. It's too expensive for a kid, so most end up going with a regular iPad as the gift model. It's also one of their most widely used enterprise products, so they want to get it ready for Apple Intelligence. They also said they wouldn't be surprised if this was the last iteration.

I use a mini at home, never carry it outside, it’s easier to handle and walk around with. And usually hold it landscape mode, I answer my emails with and many other daily stuff. It’s very useful.
