The Magsafe: Is it?

Safe, I mean. I've heard some stories, on this forum and elsewhere, about the Magsafe cable being prone to crimping near the connector, causing melting, smoking, etc. Has Apple addressed this issue yet? I'd be a lot more comfortable ordering a MacBook if I knew I didn't have to worry about burning my house down....:eek:
 
I wouldn't put the magsafe in my pocket with a bunch of keys and some loose change, but hooked up to a Mac and used properly, there's nothing wrong with it.
 
My cat & dog has gotten to it when they were small but even with teeth marks and having the cord get abused in moving it around and hitting the end on different things it works PERFECT. Besides the OS X operating system, the Magsafe is the next fav thing from Apple.

On the bottom of the list is there actual hardware but that's another story...

* MBP is running good so far; knock on wood.

When the Magsafe cable was first introduced there were some issues surrounding the connector head and the cable stress reliever. This issue was resolved by apple by providing a slightly larger stress reliever. From what I can tell there have been no further reports of problems since that correction.

Apple is a company. Companies want money. Money can be made selling products. Products sell more if customers are satisfied with them. Products don't sell if there are problems. If there are problems with a product, the company would (should) fix it up immediately. The MagSafe is about 15 months old now. If there was a problem, do you really think they would continue to sell it, which would cost Apple money in fixing it?

Sorry to be blunt, but i don't like the idea of people complaining about issues which either affected a very small proportion of people, or which were fixed a long time ago.

wel its 14'c here where i am in not so sunny england and its nearly middle of sumer and midday. ment to be 29'c later in the week but thats not the point :D :p
 
Not to hijack this thread but I went to the applestore the other day to check out the Magsafe thing. It seems to me that if someone came and tripped over the cable, that the laptop would pull with it to a point. It seems like that thing is pretty stuck to it unless its a really fast jolt (aka someone running into it) and if it was steady constant pressure it would mean bye-bye laptop. Anyone ever had it "release" from the occasion it is meant to prevent>?

I trip on mine all the time. It pulls out very easily if you pull on the cord at an angle, like what would happen if you trip over it. If you pull it straight back steadily, yeah it could pull the computer off a table, but generally any sort of accident will result in a sharp tug that pulls it right out. All in all, I love my mag-safe.

i recently went to the apple store and had the same thought. is it possible that they also have a special magsafe that doubles as a lock so that people can't unplug the computer and try to walk out of the store with it? i didn't see any other locks on the computers, and this seemed logical to me.
 
The MagSafe design is quite marvelous. If you try to pull it straight out, it's VERY hard to do... But pulling it out at an angle is a much easier task - and that's what usually happens if someone inadvertently trips over it. It's happened once to me and saved my MacBook.

Having said that, my cable is majorly crimping. This is a first-gen MacBook, so hopefully it's been fixed with later MagSafe models.

When I was in NYC a few weeks ago, in the flagship store, I unplugged the magsafe and was completely mobile with the notebook. [I think..., I may be wrong - but I was remember being surprised about the mobility in the store]

I bet they have sensors inside them, I'm sure they want to demonstrate the entire "magsafe" feature.
