Presuming the microphone is the same in each, do you think it has enough power for a lecture hall? If not, do you know of any decent, external models? Do they sell optical versions?

I've used my iBook's inbuilt mic in lectures before. So long as there's not too many people talking and the lecturer is either a good projector or on a mic themselves the quality actually surprised me. I'd imagine if I were using GarageBand instead of Word to do the recording the quality would be even better due to the auto-ducking features.
It was definitely audible, I imported the audio file into iTunes and have a couple of playlists for my subjects.
