This post is an answer seeking a question essentially, but I kind of feel that it is needed.

The modbook is a macbook that has been converted into a tablet.

It is quite a bit more expensive than most of the other tablets out there (ignoring the fact that there are no mac os x tablets aside from it)

It is also a bit on the heavy side, and it does have it's share of quirks (for instance, mine has had to be repaired for a jumping cursor).

Because it has no keyboard it can get frustrating to write anything longer than a paragraph, and the built in graphics card really is not made for doing intensive gaming.

But the point of this thread is not to put down the modbook, but to promote it.

It is a *fantastic* piece of equipment for anyone who does enough digital work that requires pressure sensitivity to start shopping around for cintiqs or intuos 3's.

Given a fast 7200 rpm hard drive and four gigs of ram, both of which are fairly cheap when bought with it, it can handle huge files like nobody's business.

It is far more fully functional than most other tablets on the market, and has at least double the pressure sensitivity of other tablets as well.

It is (in my opinion) the superior choice to a cintiq because it has the benefit of being portable, as well as being able to work for hours without being plugged in, both of which are weaknesses on the heavily wired cintiqs.

I've used it extensively since march with zero wear on the screen, and it has become my sole digital tool, absolutely spoiling me when it comes to digital illustration.

I am in love with this tablet, and I made this thread because I so rarely see it get the positive mention that I know it deserves.

A great, if quirky, piece of machinery that I feel has quickly slipped far beneath the radar of even those that could benefit from it.

i would rather buy a cintiq, save about $300 and enjoy the way larger screen.
people who would use this for digital art wouldn't need the portability of the mod book and would need the larger screen and keyboard.

well... I hate to disagree, but *I* use it for digital art, and the portability makes my life much easier.

Previously to this I used a wacom intuos 3.

I was essentially shackled to my desktop, and after 8 hours sitting in front of it I was almost always aching a bit.

When I need a larger screen to view images as I work on them I hook the modbook up to an external display, and then drag images over to it to see how they look if I need to.

However I also get to draw while sitting comfortably on the couch, while traveling, when I want to go work at a friends place, and even bring it with me to work.

Also, the thing to remember is that you aren't *just* getting the screen.

you are getting a macbook as well. The cintiq is only a screen.

I find the ModBook VERY interesting..and more appealing than a cintiq. I wish I could connect a keyboard to it though.

Just trying to be patient, cuz I think Apple's got a tablet up their sleeve.

my two cents....

I have to say, I'd love a modbook. It would be the perfect accompaniment to my MBP. My wacom tablet has given up after 5 years and I would love to get a modbook instead of a replacement tablet.

Can you use the tablet feature as a tablet for other computers somehow?

Only problem is I live in the UK and they don't sell them here. Oh, no sorry there is another problem too - I'm not made of money lol

Can we see pictures of this Modbook? I'm quite interested.

I have a Modbook - got it in June - and I agree with Mr B, it's a great piece of gear! I'm using it as my primary computer now and while the smaller screen sometimes is limiting, I love the pen interface and find it annoying going back to a mouse when using other computers. I use a frogpad keypad with it which eliminates the limitations of HWR.

For drawing and photoshop, working directly on the screen is absolutely natural and I would never so back to the "old" method. It's so much more intuitive and realistic to be touching directly the image that you are working on. OK, you get that with the cintiq but you don't get the portability, which in the end was for me the thing that clinched the deal. I can take it up a mountain top - try doing that with a cintiq!

It's a fantastic item and I love it!

I wonder if Apple has approved of this.
I also haven't seen this in any store so I believe it is available only online.

And you guys passed up something very important regarding the keyboard and mouse.
Is has multiple USB ports so if you wanted to you could actually plug in a mouse and keyboard.

In their forums they state

"Axiotron is an Apple Authorized Proprietary Solution Provider"

And on their main site they say they only sell in the USA Through OWC, and in Canada through Carbon Computing. No where else at them moment.

Very true.

Also when working on a very large sized file it's very easy to just plug in a larger monitor into the modbook with an adapter.

Although the touch sensitivity will of course only be on the modbook, you can easily use a mouse to drag files back and forth, or keep half of your workflow in the larger screen above the modbook.

I'm no graphic guy at all, only used pen screen on my SE P910i.
So I can not weigh on requirements of actual paying clientele of Modbook ...

But I was wondering for some time - why nobody even thought about "Modbook 2" based on MBA

There's many "freaks" making MBAs their only/primary Macs (I guess I'll join them this fall:rolleyes:)
But Modbook is always a secondary tool, I guess. So, there's even less need in DVD, whole array of ports, etc. (and you can still use BT to connect keyboard & mouse )

Still, overall MacBook Air would make great Modbook 2 !!!
Fantastic screen (for me anyway)
Light (as you clearly after portability, isn't it?)
Professional - isn't looks count as well :D
Adequate - Photoshopping off SSD has it's advantages I believe.

So what do you guys think?
And do you think there is any other user's group beyond graphic pros, who got hooked up on Modbook ?

The screen of the Modbook Air would be thicker than the rest of the machine.

Why is that?

I've never seen Modbook in person, yet it looks like it's the same thickness as MB.

True they got rid of keyboard case, other side of screen ...
It would take complete redesign probably, with only lower shell intact ?
Keyboard bearing top case most probably should be gone ....

Still - I was asking, if idea of lighter Modbook, based on "Air Philosophy" is of any appeal to you ....

to be honest the price of a modbook air would be somewhat prohibitive for the speed you get.

Since the modbook is intended for pro users the speed reduction of the air would be frustrating when dealing with massive photoshop and illustrator files.

I think what most people are asking for is a modbook pro.

a better, larger screen and a better graphics card would be helpful for many people.

Because to put all of the touch technology into the screen piece it would have to be as thick as the macbook screen which would be thicker than the body of the macbook air.

My modbook is on order

I finally decided to order a modbook. I know that new macbooks are prolly coming, but I don't care... I really want the modbook now and will upgrade if they offer a new device based off the new macbooks if/when it's released. I was railed on hard for my first post to macrumors, so I will try to give a full review here after I get the device.

Excellent! I look forward to reading your views!

That's awesome!
You should definitely give us some reviews.

For a tablet, it has a great amount of ram.
Does anyone know how big the hard drive it?

I have looked at these before and was discouraged by the integrated graphic card with shared memory.

If they made a "ModBook Pro" edition with the same computing power of the MacBook Pro, I would buy one.

I have used various Tablet PC's for the past 4 years and love the concept. They are great note taking devices but I would not consider them a serious design tool.

What did they actually do to repair it? Did they replace the screen?
I've luckily never had even a hint of the jumping cursor problem. Touch Wood!
