I keep getting this message.

The catch is, the computer is always plugged in when I do the backups.

Is this a bug? Is something else going on? How do I find out if the "most recent backup" actually did (or didn't) complete?

Why wouldn't a backup complete on battery, irrespective of whether or not the computer was actually plugged in?

It's an MBP 18,4.

My 2021 MBP does the same thing. It is always plugged in when performing backups and it has never been set to low power mode.

Thanks for the replies.

Low Power Mode is set to "Never."

I just noticed the warning again. I went over a week without backing up (unusual for me). The message reminding me to back up, also said that the last one didn't complete because the computer wasn't plugged in, even though it was.

I back up my MacBook Air M2 laptop every week or 2(+) by docking it to a dedicated drive and everything is running off AC power. I have 2018 MacBook Pro with a POS butterfly keyboard in my house that I do the same thing with. BOTH of these MacBooks give the same puzzling error.

Many others are reporting this same problem. I'm inclined to believe this alert is triggered by the Time Machine's attempt to do a timed backup--but it's unable to find the backup drive attached at that time. So IMHO, the alert contains incorrect and alarming text making it an "erroneous error dialog box". D'ya think Apple knows about this concerning bug by now? Yeah, me too.

The solution others have reported is to turn off the timed backups. Personally, I'm leaving it on. It is a good reminder of the need for a backup as well as a reminder of Apple's dogged, relentless commitment to quality first, profits be d@mned! Not. (Have I mentioned that I have a MacBook Pro with a "butterfly keyboard"?)

Maybe worth testing with another charger+ cable

Maybe disable Optimized Battery charging and Manage Battery Longevity in Battery settings
