With the new ATV, you need to have iTunes running on a computer, you can then use home sharing to stream video in iTunes to the new ATV.

I have been ripping my DVD collection (both movies and TV shows) to my iMac, using handbreak to convert them to an iTunes friendly format and then loading into iTunes. It works very well and the Ui in ATV is very easy to use.

she has her own desktop pc i have 2 macs a late 09 mac mini and mid 2010 macbook pro 13in so i can get those dvd to a hd for her

The first step is to get them onto the HD, but then you need to get them into iTunes. Handbreak does a great job of this and has an AppleTV preset that works very well. The iTunes will need to be "running" while you are using the ATV.

I just let iTunes run all the time on our iMac.

I have a 4TB ext HDD that i keep my iTunes library on.

well she also likes the agatha christie mystery movies and tv shows she has all the hercule pyro i know thats not how u spell it on dvd. we also have the complete all season mash tv series and a few others so i will have my work cut out for me. i use the ipod touch iphone preset to watch my vids on tv through my mac min and i cant tell a difference i just have to let her watch and see
my mac mini uses a 1 tera byte drive and i have a lot of space left for now and my macbook pro uses a 750gb western digital passport essential drive right now for its itunes so i thought a 1 to 1.5 tera for her should be fine
