The new iMac is selling like hot cakes.

It's been out a week today, and already the shipping times have increased. For the 20" 2.0Ghz, 20" 2.4Ghz, and 24" 2.4Ghz, the shipping time is up to 5-7 days, and for the 24' 2.8Ghz the shipping time is up to 7-10 days.

I'm glad I ordered my imac when I did. Regardless of what some people may think about glossy screens, and graphics cards, the new imacs seem to be selling like hot cakes.

Or do all new computers from apple tend to take longer to ship a bit after when they first come out?

It is a fine machine, with broad market appeal and has a good entry point for many different groups. Its quick success is not surprising.

A hotcake is a revision 'A' laptop which also goes by the appellation "leg warmers". As in "yes, I survived the blizzard thanks to my revision A Macbook Pro leg warmers".

It doesn't really seem like they would be selling like "hot cakes", i think that it is more that they don't have a lot of stock.

Or maybe it is like that thing where people claim there aren't problems with a product. It is just that very vocal minority. Maybe it seems as if there are lots of sales because of people here. And we know they aren't important in the grand scheme of it.

On the other hand, if the supply wasn't constrained such that Apple's web site is showing 7-10 days to get the top model instead of the 3-5 that they started with, all the self anointed Mac Pundits would be declaring the new iMac a huge flop! So, Apple has learned a wee bit about marketing, now haven't they.

Pancakes usually sell 3-6 at a time. I like them best served with huckleberries and pure maple syrup!

Inventory probably has become constrained as they are having to set aside enough inventory to replace systems that have been purchased that have 1 dead pixel, or it is making a "funny noise", or the screen looks yellow, or maybe because the screen looks darker on the top then on the bottom. Then again there might be a twist tie missing on the powercord, how about "I know something must be wrong because I read on MacRumors that I must have a problem".

I think Apple agreed that they would not sell hot cakes & IHOP would not sell computers. I know I must have read that somewhere.

Call and find out. From what people have been saying the 24" imac is hard to get ahold of from an apple store.

Your best bet would be to call the store to see when they expect a shipment in, then go to the store when they open, walk up to a sales associate and say I WANT A 24" IMAC! before someone else can buy it.

Regents Street are all out of 24s, although they have a few 20s.
