macOS the next great cocoa app

I'm a software engineer. I've got almost 10 years professional experience. I finish my masters degree in 2 weeks, assuming I pass my exit exams. I'm also single and have too much free time. As such, I want to make the next great cocoa app. I just need ideas. Is there any software that we Mac users need but don't have? People with good ideas and the ability to help with GUI layout and icons/other graphics a plus. :)

So, give me some cool ideas and see if you can inspire me to make a new Cocoa app. Hey, maybe some of the other OSX developers on the forum could find inspiration if we get a good thread going.

I know FairPlay, but I for one would love a DRM stripper for iTunes purchased music.

I use Adium. Ever since I started using it, which was 2 PBs ago, I notice it crashes half the time when I send files. Not sure why that is. Yeah it could probably use some help. :p

With people's interest in disk burning software increasing with all the attention Disco is getting, I've been thinking about writing a cheap shareware version of Toast that does virtually everything that Toast does (Disco is trying this but it still way behind). You could write a nice Cocoa wrapper around cdrecord that competes with Toast (as commercial) and Disco (as shareware) and Burn (as freeware).

It's pretty hard to come up with ideas that no one else has thought of that are must-haves, but I usually think of apps I use and ways I can improve them and go from there.

A mobile (Java + BREW) app that can control your Mac from anywhere over WAP or something.

For Example:

Tell your computer to wake up from another state/etc.



Just an idea.

This is a good idea. So you mean an app for a phone that can connect to a small server on your mac that can execute applescripts or something set up on your computer and relay that to the cell phone app? Why not just use a wap server? What would the app on the phone do particularly? Well, maybe the scripts could be written to output things in XML and the phone app could display it properly.

I'm starting to think about making my own mp3 player since iTunes is a total CPU hog. There's no reason my 1.67 ghz g4 pb (soon to be a c2d when it ships) can't play mp3s with <1% cpu usage like WinAmp.

The app could just act as a gui & could connect to the Mac (Over WAP or the computer could somehow act as a server otherwise)

Kind of like Salling Clicker, only not using BT and more powerful.

I thought about that once. Working with a Linksys router would be kind of easy. You'd just have to handle HTTP authentication requests, and then POST some forms and parse some HTML... it'd be ugly but doable.

i looked up Salling Clicker and that's kind of cool, really. A couple questions:

Would this really need to travel over your cell service? Why not use BT or something? If we made it a java mobile app, you could configure buttons on your mobile device and have some corresponding action you could configure on the Mac. That'd be cool.

While we're thinking about all this, what could I write to make myself rich? :)

If it did use BT, wouldn't it be just another Salling Clicker? Yeah, it would be cool to be able to configure certain keys. The reason I wanted it in Java & Brew was that 99% of Verizon phones use Brew technology instead of Java.

Two suggestions:

  1. a Cocoa front end for MS Access databases.

  • port ntfs-3g to OS X (ok no GUI for that, but I want this)

id like a gui for a vd decoder. theer is a vcd decoder out there somewhere but ti uses terminal...which i dont. btw vcd= video cd
