Since everyone is going on about the notch but no-one's had a hands on yet, I thought I'd do a quick experiment/proof of concept to see if it *really* makes it more practical vs any debatable aesthetic discontent. Tick tock, it's science o'clock!

Well, it does look like you can get approximately 2 extra "Quick brown dogs" for your moneysworth! Not exactly the most accurate comparison due to OS + screen size, but thought it would be fun at least.

Also, welcome to Windows laptops, 2023...

Given laptops are vertically challenged and macos has a menu bar, and the 16:10 screen is fully intact below the notch, it seems a reasonable idea. Its pure bonus.

I would not be surprised however if there is a system preference to disable the notch with a permanent black bar at top.

Yeah, I was kinda being somewhat silly sticking a printout of my Windows taskbar in a notch concept to see how much difference it made, but it was half-serious and that is clearly some noticeable gain. Even if not a truly sensible ratio for this laptop's bezel size and taskbar, it's more akin to what you'd actually get with a Mac/menubar in screen ratio.

Im so bothered by the lack of vertical height when I use office that I use the dock on the right on both windows and mac, so this feature to me is really nice. I think the notch folks will settle down once they realize the 16:10 area is untouched. Your mockup makes a lot of sense. Microsoft can put their stupid cortana search bar up there too :)

You have your text WAY smaller than my older eyes can see. So I may be able to have one more QBF, but that's not even certain!

Yeah, does depend what I’m doing. If I’m writing it would normally be larger. Sometimes checking reports and the like I have it smaller similar to this. My Mac I’ll more be looking at audio tracks and plugins to be fair. So it was the vaguest “measurement”, but I defo see “more stuff” on screen. My eyes aren’t quite as good as they used to be, so alternatively the notch means I could see the same amount with more aged eyes by increasing the doc size. :)
