I'm surprised to see all the backlash against the notch on the iPhone X. I think there are some pretty obvious reasons why Apple went this route that people are just ignoring.

1) The symmetry to the MacOS Dock. In fact, i think this is the fundamental reason. The dock is essentially the notch, just at the bottom of the screen. And just like the notch, content can extend past it and be seen on the edges.

2) In landscape mode, this gives us a place to grip the phone without covering the screen. It essentially acts as a thin bezel, with all the benefits of a bezel, but without taking up much room and impacting the nice big beautiful display.

3) It helps to differentiate this as an iPhone. The top-end edge to edge phones all look similar. People could very easily mistake this phone for an S8, and LG V30, etc. This is the new "brand identifier" of apple that will make people realize immediately that someone has a high-end brand new iphone, and will perpetuate Apple's reputation.

Those are off the top of my head, anyone got any more?

It is not going to change so you are going to have to put up with the notch or move on. Either way Apple will sell boat loads.

Apple is not asking to be "excused"!

I'm sure you're right, but it's not fair that other manufacturers can release brilliant designs, yet Apple can release this sloppy effort and outsell everyone else by millions.

Not that I have a problem with the notch. But I'm certain if apple could fit all that at the top without a notch. They would do it in a heartbeat.

This phone isnt edge to edge no matter how much people want it to be

I haven't been paying much attention to some of the other phones out there but are there any issues with the ones that truly are edge to edge? At least on the sides? I know for my 6, it's difficult to tap or scroll anything on the very sides when it's in the Apple leather case. I can imagine the issues with some of the very edge screens.

I love my apple products however it's a business and they definitely 'save' their updates for later and hand us crumbs while we pay over a thousand for an iPhone X because an edge to edge phone on the 8 would be way too generous.

This isn't rocket science... it's business. There is a reason Apple drags their feet on features that other phones have had for a while. One,they take the time to perfect it before they put it out there. Other companies have to be first with new tech because that's the only way they can even begin to compete with Apple. Two, if they packed everything into this phone that everyone wants there wouldn't be as much incentive to upgrade every year. By slowly releasing features, now they are doing it with accessories like the wireless charging case for AirPods and the Air power charging mat, they make more money because they give people a reason to upgrade every year. This "supply shortage" and delaying the launch of the phone builds up hype for the phone and it also forces people to make extra payments on their current phones before trading them in. They are winning, their partners are winning and we get something to be excited about every year. No other product on the planet creates this much noise, good or bad, than the iPhone... Apple puts up yet another "W" on their way to making even more money.

1 and 3 are the dumbest things I have ever heard

Fair has nothing to do with it, you sound like Bernie Sanders. Apple has built itself into a position where it can make money selling a product people want, when people don't want it anymore they will either adapt or die off.
[doublepost=1505430835][/doublepost]The notch is what it is, I haven't held one to see if it would bother me but I don't think it will. I'm not a movie watcher and I very rarely use the phone on its side so it probably won't bother me. If it does I won't buy it, no big deal.
Having it smaller than the plus but same size screen would be nice but if the battery isn't as good I won't buy it.

1. Can't you hide the Mac dock though? Pretty sure you can't hide the notch.

2. That doesn't make much sense. A.) you'd be smudging the cameras and B.) the notch cuts off the screen as if there was a thumb there at all times...

3. This is probably the most likely reason, but it is sad that they chose a "brand identifier" over the user experience.

Don't get me wrong, I'm planning on getting an X as I believe the pros outweigh the cons. But "embracing the notch" still looks silly to me.

Just no. The average person minimizes the dock in Mac OS.

There is still enough bezel to not need a big bar on phone to hold it.

If you can see the big bar you can see it’s running iOS.

i would take no selfies and no notch and even no face id
i would trade it all for no notch
