I'm surprised to see all the backlash against the notch on the iPhone X. I think there are some pretty obvious reasons why Apple went this route that people are just ignoring.

1) The symmetry to the MacOS Dock. In fact, i think this is the fundamental reason. The dock is essentially the notch, just at the bottom of the screen. And just like the notch, content can extend past it and be seen on the edges.

2) In landscape mode, this gives us a place to grip the phone without covering the screen. It essentially acts as a thin bezel, with all the benefits of a bezel, but without taking up much room and impacting the nice big beautiful display.

3) It helps to differentiate this as an iPhone. The top-end edge to edge phones all look similar. People could very easily mistake this phone for an S8, and LG V30, etc. This is the new "brand identifier" of apple that will make people realize immediately that someone has a high-end brand new iphone, and will perpetuate Apple's reputation.

Those are off the top of my head, anyone got any more?
Is that you, Phil?

I really dislike this sheep mentality throughout the community. I don't even care that much about the notch, but the design looks pretty distracting to say the least.

Like the other person said, none of you will be trying to rationalize this if Samsung did it. All biases aside, Samsung phones are much more aesthetically pleasing to most people.

Dear God, please let clickbait titles perish from the earth. I have an opinion and here's why. You won't believe the opinion that I have. How I got to have an opinion with this easy trick, essayists hate me.
Two men walk into a bar. What happens next will floor you.

it doesn't bother me at all.

You're right...and this is perfectly fine as well:

Q: Do you think a notch would improve the aesthetics of the Galaxy S8?
A: No, it would look terrible.

Q: Would you have slaughtered the S8 for including a notch?
A: Yes, you'd have laughed until the cows came home

I don't give any thought as to the aesthetics of Galaxys or Samsungs or whatever. Their functionality with respect to integration across all my platforms and online services are grossly lacking, so they're not even a consideration for me. How they look is of zero concern to me.

I actually like the look of the notch personally. I for one was glad they embraced it rather than trying to hide it with software like in some of the mockups.

It does make for a unique silhouette and could end up being a good brand identifier in the future.

1) That would make sense if I cared about symmetry with the MacOS Dock, but the phone doesn't even have symmetry with itself! Put the phone in landscape mode, you lose symmetry with the screen itself because of the bezel cutout.

2) I don't want my phone to dictate where I should grip and where I want my display to be covered up while I am watching a video.

3) I don't want a differentiating factor that makes no sense and blocks out my screen usage.

On the keynote when watching media I wish it would cut the screen size down before the notch.. from what it looked like it actually wrapped the movie around it and cut off some of the screen. Not a huge deal and probably wouldnt miss anything but it seemed weird. I do understand the need for the notch with all the cameras but wish they maybe just made the phone a tad taller or something to avoid it.

I did see a video saying it's optional to watch media with the notches or a different aspect ratio so that is nice

The notch doesn't get in the way if watching in true aspect ratio, and the black bars on either side that produces are thinner than the bezels on the 8 or 8+.

It's not perfect, and I'd have preferred a black strip uniform with the notch like we all would, but neither is it the disaster some people are getting hysterical about.

Good lord you die hard blind loyalist really need to grow a pair. When Apple does something so darn ridiculous like the notch, speak the hell up and give them both barrels. All your kool aid drinking in past years has made you wait all those years for smaller bezels, bigger screens and an OLED screen. And for your loyalty, you're getting a massive price hike, and a second rate OLED screen from Samsung's sloppy seconds bin. Good grief. #getwoke

I'm done with humanity for a while.
Really? the symmetry with macOS is the funniest thing I've heard all year

1/ this dock argument doen't make any sense whatsoever.

2/ when I hold my 7+ in landscape mode I never put any finger on the front side, as it should be.

3/ nope I don't think that's what Apple had in mind, "make sure it doesn't look like a Samsung or an LG"...

...what I think they had in mind though, is that YOU HAVE TO PUT THIS SPEAKER, INFRARED CAMERA, SENSORS, ETC, SOMEWHERE!!!!!!

Have you guys even noticed that the S8 or LG are not really edge-to-edge? Why, because they have to put the same stuff as Apple on the FRONT. I hate to break it to you but the iPhone X is STILL A PHONE. Maybe you'd rather have the speaker on the back so everyone could complain how dumb Apple was to not have it *on your ear*.

Maybe that will change, maybe technology will allow them to do things differently in the future, but for now, that's how it is. It's not a home theater, it's not a photo album, it's A PHONE. Get over it FFS.

Some people are trying way too hard to justify it. If it doesn't bother you, then why get upset and try and justify it?

Really not that hard actually. It's called common sense. What bothers me though is the level of nonsense that spread across the entire iPhone section every september. No wonder Apple is "dumbing down" theirs apps/OSes...
