The notch by itself is not a problem. We've all seen some render of iOS that could "mask" this notch by putting the two "tails" in black with white inscription about battery and network and so on. When I saw this I was in love... but Apple decided not to go this way...

Pretty poor decision to compromise the screen and aesthetics for the sake of marketing gimmicks.

If you can think through Apple's process, it's far from a poor decision, and far from being a marketing gimmick.

Think about how iconic the iPhone design has been for the past 10 years. Always identifiable in a sea of smartphones. It's likely that this was part of their reasoning for not using bezels like Samsung and LG are.

If the notch was a good idea, everyone would be saying how good it looks.

Nobody is saying how good it looks because it's over the top ugly.

People tend to post more when they want to complain about things or justify their decision not to buy. I am sure there are millions (like myself) that love the X and like the new design, notch included. Many just don't feel the need to post about it.

I don't think Apple can be excused for this. But you can try.
The excuse is that they couldn't do FaceID without the notch, so they decided to embrace it. I believe in the coming years (who knows how many), they'll look to miniaturize that technology to the point where they can make an iPhone with all of the features of the X without the notch.

Don't like the notch, that's fine. Np don't buy and move on with your life.

Reading though this is better than watching Saturday Night Live.

Holy crap Batman.

:p

I'm surprised to see all the backlash against the notch on the iPhone X. I think there are some pretty obvious reasons why Apple went this route that people are just ignoring.

1) The symmetry to the MacOS Dock. In fact, i think this is the fundamental reason. The dock is essentially the notch, just at the bottom of the screen. And just like the notch, content can extend past it and be seen on the edges.

2) In landscape mode, this gives us a place to grip the phone without covering the screen. It essentially acts as a thin bezel, with all the benefits of a bezel, but without taking up much room and impacting the nice big beautiful display.

3) It helps to differentiate this as an iPhone. The top-end edge to edge phones all look similar. People could very easily mistake this phone for an S8, and LG V30, etc. This is the new "brand identifier" of apple that will make people realize immediately that someone has a high-end brand new iphone, and will perpetuate Apple's reputation.

Those are off the top of my head, anyone got any more?

Drink the iKool-much. The notch looks like pure garbage....

Offering a difference of opinion does not necessarily equate to one drinking the Kool-Aid, nor does it mean that one is blind to what others believe is the most hideous creation for an iPhone. It simply means that some like the new iPhone X, and appreciate what Apple may be trying to accomplish.

Put on some prescription objectivity lenses and you just might see more clearly the points being made, even if you don't agree.

The notch is simply wrong. The ears are 'not to be touched'...so just fill it in black.

Even John Gruber hates the notch....and he's pretty much in bed with Apple.

This is exactly what gets the Anti Apple club all worked up. But very few of us buy Apple stuff as a status symbol. Just works out that way :D

Such a good point, but unfortunately it seems most of the people commenting don’t spend time to think logically or rationally about a topic. Just idiotic lines like the one below.

And even more amazing is that they get upvoted. Really shows the quality of discussion that occurs on this forum. I know, it’s a forum, people can say whatever they like. Don’t even need to agree on a topic, but it would be nice to have some collegial discussion or debate. Instead it’s filled mostly comments that are at the caliber of 10 year olds.

I suspect the thread was started as satire (the notch as status symbol? lol), but in any case it doesn't bother me THAT much. It would bother me when watching video, but I read that by default full screen video will be framed under the notch. I would think that when they figure out how to house all those sensors under the screen and keep 'em working, they'll abandon the notch in an instant.

ALL THAT SAID, I think I'm going to hold onto my 6S Plus for another year and get gen 2 of the X. iPhone 8 looks nice but it's still so similar to the 6 and 7 that I'm not driven to upgrade and the X feels like a work-in-progress right now.

Another important point is that when I'm muttering or thinking to myself, I'm calling it the "ex", not the "ten".

Except that none of you would like this if it were put out by any other company.

Apple tried to accomplish an E2E screen but were limited by technological caps. They could have just embraced that fact and made the objectively better design by blacking out the ears, but they needed the optical illusion of E2E so they colored in the ears.

This is more about marketing than anything else. "look, we have a real E2E display because these tiny ears prove it."

Anyone that thinks this is a fashion statement, a trademark look, or anything else is delusional.

I am not saying you have to dislike the ears. Personally I don't think they are that bad on the home screen or lock screen. But people that are making up nonsense (e.g. The dude who said this was like the MacBook dock) to justify it are fanboys, plain and simple.

If you are not bothered by it, it's totally cool. I'm going to own an X myself, and I'll get over it since I'll upgrade the next year. But don't make up excuses.

My friends are all android, and we joke argue all the time about each other's phones. And I always read all the hate for Apple and think it's irrational. But hearing some people say things like "the ears look good. It's a fashion statement" makes me understand why people call us sheep.

This is the most objectively bad design there is in the design world, UX/UI world, etc. would love to hear some UX/UI professors opinions on it.

I don't care what other companies do. I care what Apple does, as I enjoy the use of the Apple ecosystem. If I don't like what I see in an Apple product, I don't buy it. And if the iPhone X doesn't work out for me, I will not hesitate to return it, and keep going wth my iPhone 7 plus.

I have no problem if someone doesn't like the iPhone X. However, at least offer up a logical argument, instead of bemoaning how this, that, and the other is a fail, when the phone hasn't even been released, and said person(s) haven't even gone through a hands on in the store.

I think a lot of people are feeding off the negativity of others around here, and the plethora of emotional hyperbole wrapped in logical fallacy point to that ugly but salient state affairs.

You don't have to care what other companies do. That doesn't rebut my comment that you would hate this design if it were put out by any other company. If anything, you're proving my point about brand loyalty induced blindness.

We already have plenty of information (keynote vids, hands on vids, developer documentation, etc) on how it is an OBJECTIVELY bad UI/UX design. It cuts off content. Period. To have it not cut off content, you must gimp the display into the safe zones. We don't need to use it ourselves hands on to know what is to come.

There is nothing emotional about this except for the fanboys who are hurt that so many people are criticizing the company and product they love. I'm not upset in any way whatsoever. There's zero logical fallacy in my arguments. Im not even sure what you mean by "salient state of affairs." Do you?

I don't give a - you know what - about brands. Period. But I must confess I miss the "Think Different" days... now it's more like "Here, Fido!".

Ah...! The iPhone! Best phone I ever had. Everything else was crap. Really. But then in September 2014 Samsung made the Galaxy S5... Fulll HD AMOLED display, Qi wireless charging, Gorilla Glass 3, 2160p@30fps video rec, microSD up to 256 GB, 2GB RAM, 16mpx camera, USB 3, MHL TV-out, Miracast... Jesus, it was even freaking waterproof! And that was three years ago...! And for those who say "Samsung doesn't know how to make software"... oh please, do try at least a bloody Galaxy S6 (six) and stop crying "only Apple knows".

Now the iPhone X! Let's see... face ID? An expensive step down from Touch ID. Animoji? Oh yes, my eight years old will love it! Qi Wireless charging? Oh well, better late than never. And finally a "no bezel", "edge to edge display"...? Seriously?! But it's got a black bezel all around the screen! And what's up with the freaking notch, right? I'll tell you what's up with that... it's the only way they've managed to say it's a 5.8" inch screen, what in reality it - obviously! - isn't! Just another crappy marketing trick from the - nowadays - Apple for the minions.

I'm not going to bother you with more details so I'll finally go straight to the point: just choose one out of three. Should be easy enough.
PS1: the original photo is from iMore; sorry for the crappy editing on the other two.
PS2: the point is not the image showing on screen but how actually the screen itself (frame/format/shape) will impact your daily life.

It’s funny seeing all the unwashed who have notch problems. It’s better they did it this way than simply have a bar. Even so there will be software tweaks later most likely. It’s such a non issue.

Why are you telling me I would hate the notch if Samsung did it? You don't know me.

I have no problem with the design (in and of itself) That goes for Apple, Samsung or whomever. If that same design gets in the way of my use of the phone, then the phone would be returned regardless of brand.

I am not some apologist for Apple. I am a common sense forum member who gives people 'what for' on both sides of the brand fence. While I enjoy Apple, it doesn't bother me that others like and use Android.

Here is a quick edited version of my shot above. You can see how much better it looks with the content expanded to fit - why did Apple choose to put bars on the sides, seriously?

I actually like Apple's version better. The notch gives the phone character and distinguishes itself from all the competitors. I can't wait for the X! :D
