The notch by itself is not a problem if you "cover it up" by software. We've all seen render where the top of the screen stays black and only shows battery/time/network. This design was flawless to me. I was sure 100% that's what Apple would do with iOS11 and the new iphone. I was wrong... and the worst part is, even if they realise it was a mistake, they won't correct it by software because they are stubborn. They prefer to commit to their errors and that is a shame.

Again... not stubbornness... it's just so they can say it's 5.8"... a bloody 5.8" screen size. If they used the black background with white icons and all black during, for example, video playback, they couldn't say it was a 5.8" screen. I know. It's embarrassing.
I'm beginning to think the X is actually an a$$hole: ... "It's all screen"... that's the iPhone X... you know where you can put it.

Iphone X pro now with notchless design

I'm sure you're right, but it's not fair that other manufacturers can release brilliant designs, yet Apple can release this sloppy effort and outsell everyone else by millions.

Millions will buy the X for bragging rights... no matter how ridiculous that notch makes the phone look.

I pre-ordered the 8 Plus. I went with the proven phone... I'll let someone else beta test the X for a year or two... just like I did with the watch. ;)

If you can think through Apple's process, it's far from a poor decision, and far from being a marketing gimmick.

Think about how iconic the iPhone design has been for the past 10 years. Always identifiable in a sea of smartphones. It's likely that this was part of their reasoning for not using bezels like Samsung and LG are.
I honestly don't care about Apple's marketing and branding. All I care about is having a good experience when buying a 1000 + Dollar phone.
[doublepost=1505809319][/doublepost]The iPhone X, in my opinion, is a ridiculously overpriced phone with an edge to edge display that makes no sense since you will be looking at a smaller-than-iPhone Plus-safe area most of the time. This is absurd. I don't mind a bezel as it just fades away when looking at the display. But that black notch and that white/black bar (Home gesture indicator) blocking your view? Can't accept and can't ignore it. Apple was so obsessed with an almost bezelfree edge2edge display, that they forgot about the user experience. They just want to please shareholders and are hoping that they can sell enough by manipulating us to think this is the next big thing. And FaceID? Not very safe IMO (someone picks up your phone and tricks you into looking at the phone and then runs away with the unlocked phone, switching off Find my iPhone and reseting PW immediately afterwards;-) and not very comfortable and convenient to use. The narrow display? Only 625 nits. No, thank you. I've ordered an iPhone 8 Plus.

I've installed "Xoutof10" on my Samsung s8+ from the Play store. This app adds a notch to the top of the screen. I don't even notice it in real life except in landscape mode.

fact check:

If Samsung came with a new phone with a notch like on the iPhone X, macrumors would completely take the piss out of this new Samsung phone.

But now Apple came with this notch, all of the sudden it became a beauty of a design or ''I can deal with it" (this sounds exactly as a 2nd best solution)
Funny thing is, Apple can throw anything to a certain group and they trained themselves to simply justify it.

(and no, no troll here...love all my Apple devices here at home)

But to try to rebut the criticism that this is an objectively bad design with "I am personally ok with it" is a weak rebuttal. That's what you've been doing.

On the other hand, you clearly don't understand what the word "objectively" means. You are expressing an opinion about a design, which is fine, but your opinion is clearly subjective. Please stop confusing your opinions with the facts.

Maybe if you are talking about the aesthetics of the notch, but it terms of its utility, it is objectively bad. It's not an opinion. It is fact. It blocks content. It interferes with the UI. It's objectively bad.

You want to say that you personally like how the notch looks, that is fine by me. I think you have bad taste, but that's my personal opinion. But no one can argue about the notch's deficiencies in the user interface.

I would prefer to have no notch as everyone else does, but you are very wrong. Your opinion is subjective. There is no debate.

I'm surprised to see all the backlash against the notch on the iPhone X. I think there are some pretty obvious reasons why Apple went this route that people are just ignoring.

1) The symmetry to the MacOS Dock. In fact, i think this is the fundamental reason. The dock is essentially the notch, just at the bottom of the screen. And just like the notch, content can extend past it and be seen on the edges.

2) In landscape mode, this gives us a place to grip the phone without covering the screen. It essentially acts as a thin bezel, with all the benefits of a bezel, but without taking up much room and impacting the nice big beautiful display.

3) It helps to differentiate this as an iPhone. The top-end edge to edge phones all look similar. People could very easily mistake this phone for an S8, and LG V30, etc. This is the new "brand identifier" of apple that will make people realize immediately that someone has a high-end brand new iphone, and will perpetuate Apple's reputation.

Those are off the top of my head, anyone got any more?

this level of delusion is hilarious

I do think if the notch was not incorporated into the new iPhone, it likely would have more of a well received reception in having more of a uniform display. It's definitely different looking at this new iPhone with the notch, but ultimately, I feel like I'm someone that has to experience this firsthand using it to fully understand if it's something that truly is takes away from the experience of using the iPhone.

I think argument #1 and #2 are basically ********. In landscape, most people use it by holding / cradling the top and bottom.

The functional zone for sensors was needed, and expanding it to a full narrow bezel at the top with another narrow bezel at the bottom for symmetry would make it look like an android / galaxy device.

However, there is an important second reason besides branding and that's it makes it much easier to find the top of the phone. With a phone like the Galaxy S8 it's hard to find the top side when wanting to make a call or selfie. I like how the notch combines symmetry along all sides with the notch that shows you immediately how to hold it in portrait.

I don’t really care about the notch. Face ID bothers me and is the reason I went with an 8+. Face ID doesn’t have the economy of motion like Touch ID. It’s much easier/quicker to get an 8 unlocked than the X. I’m also unconvinced Face ID is safe for your eyes.

No it is not. The notch does NOT block content for properly designed applications, as long as the developers follow latest Apple UI guidelines for iPhone X.

Top/bottom besels can also block app content, IF an app is not designed in accordance to Apple's previous guidelines for Adaptive UI (dynamic text, auto-layout, and the rest).

Every design is a series of compromises, and the notch design is what Apple has chosen, based on the current technology constraints and other considerations. You not agreeing with it and preferring some other design choice does NOT make the notch design "objectively bad".

Again - please use English language correctly - your opinion on this is subjective, and no one deemed you a final authority on a "good" versus "bad" design. End of debate.

People, the notch doesn't take away from the screen. The ears add extra real estate to the screen!

Samsung’s solution to losing the bezels was not “beautiful.” They put a fingerprint sensor on the back, right by the lens.

Apple went the facial recognition route, which required a suite of cameras on the front. Rather than including a large bezel they made the Notch a distinctive design cue.

It’s a non issue because fully zoomed video is ALWAYS cropped on smartphones. If you don’t want cropped video in landscape, don’t double tap to zoom in past the Notch. It will be letterboxed but not cropped (as on current iPhones) by default. If you double tap to zoom in, a tiny portion will be hidden by the Notch. Note that *on current iPhones even more is hidden by the bezels when you zoom in landscape mode*
