The Notorious iPad Camera Hole

It looks to be a light sensor. The tiny circular cutout is there, for sure, dead center top bezzle, but it is not a camera (I compared closely to the MBP camera).
So, now we know for sure.

Yup it is for the Light Sensor, but maybe in future renditions, it'll be the camera place holder.
 
Camera ready dot in the Bezel Border?

Hi,

If you examine the area of the Bezel (black area surrounding the screen) you will notice a small dot very similar to camera dot seen on iMACs and MAC Books. It is on the part opposite the button. I guess that is where they will eventually place the camera. I thought maybe there was one already there just waiting to be activated with an OS update BUT since these have already been dismantled and no camera was found I guess the answer is no.

Apart from anything else, there are already numerous teardowns of the iPad easily accessed on the internet -ever hear of these new inventions called "google" or "YouTube"?
It is common knowledge that this is the ambient light sensor.

Btw, I'm sorry if I seem rude as I don't like to be -but I've just read this type of thing one time too many this weekend.
 
So why...

So how come when I hold my finger over it nothing happens? And how come I didn't notice it for the first twi days I had the iPad - that one's really got me stumped - I can't look at the iPad and NOT see the hole now.

Because we need a software update pretty bad. The sensor is plain unresponsive on my iPad, and I've heard many others complain about the issue as well.
 
The iPad will always update the brightness after you slide to unlock. To test, cover the top of the iPad (where the sensor is) and slide to unlock, the screen should be somewhat dim which may or may not be noticeable. Next uncover the sensor and after waiting a few seconds, the brightness should increase.

Yeah nothing. Even in a very bright room.
 
Pretty sure mine is defective too. Covering the light sensor with a cloth for a moment and then removing it does absolutely nothing. Mind you, it also appears to do nothing on my iPhone 4.

Edit: this post is completely full of useless information as I didn't bother trying the test by the previous poster.

Works fine for me!
 
Idea for an App

some clever person could develop software that causes the ambient light sensor to scan using the GPS and motion detector to allow iPad to take a picture with its' 1 pixel sensor.

Radio telescopes manage it. :D
