So, what happens to the prices of G5s when the new Intel powered ones are announced?
Will there be a severe price drop on the Quad Core G5 on August 7?
Any precendent to this with apple's history?
Will they be discontinued right away?

I reckon they'll be totally unchanged when the Mac Pro is released. The reason being that some Pro apps aren't Universal yet, and this means a lot of Pros will be buying a G5 Power Mac in preference to an Intel Mac Pro until the Intel Mac Pro runs all Pro Apps natively.

Unlike all other models, the Power Mac will still have significant demand for the forseeable future until Adobe etc get Universal apps ready.

Don't hold your breath for a significant discount...

Except on G5s that are used - I'm sure many G5 owners will want a Mac Pro, and will need to fund that purchase. As happened to the Powerbooks, the prices of the G5s will take a hit when the new Mac Pros come out.

There hasn't been quite the mad stream of PBs and iBooks that I expected...I expect too that you'll see a sort of FIFO logic... the PM is such an investment, I think that, while there are some people who dropped $4k on a Quad system recently, you will see a lot more uptick in early PMG5s being sold? And then probably affordable dual cores and quads in about 18 mos or two years? That's my guess, actually, that it won't quite be like buying a $900 quad G5 when the new Mac Pro or whatever drops. But who knows, hopefully a win-win for all.

I'm one of em

I'm anxiously waiting the Mac Pro myself although I'm not a true 'Pro' so although I use Photoshop etc, I'm willing to suffer the performance hit until CS3. I agree with you though, prices of G5 Power Macs will drop significantly in about 7 days time (if predictions are to be believed :p)

You were here back in May, right?

Otherwise refurb Quad, Craigslist, or someone selling one here.

That's why I sold my Quad months ago for more than I paid for it because I won't be able to get much for it next week...

That money is sitting in a handsome warchest right now...until next Tuesday that is...

Oh, no, I definitely don't expect them to drop quite that much! But right now quads go for around $3k on eBay. I'd probably expect that when the Mac Pros start shipping (or perhaps a couple of weeks after), that the average price will drop closer to $2k.

Granted, the G5s are only one step behind intel, whereas the PBs were two - so it makes more sense that those prices will have dropped much more than the G5s will (especially the quads).

Also, the fact that adobe isn't universal yet might keep the prices steady for a bit, but once CS3 is released... watch those prices fall.

I would like to see them simultaneously sell them side by side - although I can't see it happening. Other posters are right that the prices will drop - but I do think they'll keep the majority of their value.

There are so many apps that aren't quite ready yet. I use Native Instruments plug ins evey day with logic and these aren't ready and keep getting pushed back in their annoucement.

The PowerMac is a very strong machine. I've got a 1.8 Dual and it competes with the best of them every day. I recently priced a Windows (Shock) PC with dual 1.8 Ghz procs just like my powermac and it came to over £2000.00! It just made me realize that what I've got is pretty good!

I won't be in a rush to switch for a good couple of years.

When the OS X-only G5 was released back in 2003, Apple kept selling G4s for those who needed OS 9. They had a price drop at the same time ($1599 to $1299?)

hmm ive been thinking about this in respect to pro apps.

A Macbook is quicker than a Quad at FCP (im sure its that anyway) soo, if the new intels ship in a quad format, I think that they should run CS2 under Rosetta around the same speed the Quad runs now, or, a little slower like the duals.

thats my pennys worth

PPC and Intel "Power Macs" Side by Side

If Apple keeps selling G5's after the Mac Pro is released the resale value of used G5's will only wobble.

If they don't, could the resale value of existing G5's go up?

So far Intel versions come out and PPC versions disappear. Will that change for the Mac Pro?

Not a chance. I had a Quad and a 17" MBP, and the Quad was still faster. That being said, it wasn't SO much faster that I could warrant having a $5000 machine around.

Could they go up?

If Apple discontinues all Power PC's (G5's) before there is Photoshop, couldn't there be an uptick in demand?

People/companies who are waiting for an Intel Power Mac aren't going to be big Adobe users. They're going to stick with the G5 until we see a Universal/Intel version.

Those masses have been satiated by the current crop of G5's.

I sold my G5 on Sunday for this very reason and bought a Mini to tide me over. However, if there is no quad core MacPro I'll be pissed! Pardon my language, I need the new MacPro so I can consolidate computers. I use AutoCAD every single day so the ability to have one workstation instead of two would be very nice.
