So I started out with a Rev A 1.6 (HDD.) My husband, who travels a lot for work, loved the look and feel of the thing and soon got his own Rev B 1.8 (also HDD.)
Eventually, my Rev A began to feel outdated and needed hinge and other repairs, plus I got tired of waiting for an update, so I bought a refurb 2.13 SSD. And just in the nick of time -- the next month the hard drive on my Rev A suddenly crapped out.
However, Apple replaced the Rev A with a brand-new Air, plus I paid the extra to upgrade to the SSD. Yay! Now we had two SSD Rev. Cs and an HDD Rev B . Until a few weeks later, when the Rev B's hard drive bit the dust. So yeah, both HDDs failed in 1 to 2.5 years, a troubling first for me with any Apple product. (However, kudos to Time Machine, which easily restored every scrap of data to a working Air.)
So now I have a few questions:
- Are the two SSDs in our remaining machines less likely to fail than the two dead HDDs? Or is there some weird Air idiosyncrasy?
- Since it merely needs to function rather than be super-snappy, I'd like to just put a new HDD in the dead Rev. B. Has anyone bought a reasonably-priced 80 or 120G replacement drive they've been happy with?
- Or am I foolish not to go for the SSD, since I'm replacing a drive anyway? (It's not a machine that's likely to undergo heavy use.)
