So I started out with a Rev A 1.6 (HDD.) My husband, who travels a lot for work, loved the look and feel of the thing and soon got his own Rev B 1.8 (also HDD.)

Eventually, my Rev A began to feel outdated and needed hinge and other repairs, plus I got tired of waiting for an update, so I bought a refurb 2.13 SSD. And just in the nick of time -- the next month the hard drive on my Rev A suddenly crapped out.

However, Apple replaced the Rev A with a brand-new Air, plus I paid the extra to upgrade to the SSD. Yay! Now we had two SSD Rev. Cs and an HDD Rev B…. Until a few weeks later, when the Rev B's hard drive bit the dust. So yeah, both HDDs failed in 1 to 2.5 years, a troubling first for me with any Apple product. (However, kudos to Time Machine, which easily restored every scrap of data to a working Air.)

So now I have a few questions:

- Are the two SSDs in our remaining machines less likely to fail than the two dead HDDs? Or is there some weird Air idiosyncrasy?

- Since it merely needs to function rather than be super-snappy, I'd like to just put a new HDD in the dead Rev. B. Has anyone bought a reasonably-priced 80 or 120G replacement drive they've been happy with?

- Or am I foolish not to go for the SSD, since I'm replacing a drive anyway? (It's not a machine that's likely to undergo heavy use.)

Thanks for any advice!

In theory an SSD should be much less prone to failure. HDD's always run the risk due to the nature of their design (moving parts). If large storage is not required I would try and get a small SSD for the rev B.

If you are pretty tech saavy, you could get the runcore SSD that is cherished on these forums, and upgrade the rev B. All depends on how much you are willing to spend. Alternatively you may also consider selling the rev B without the hard drive and upgrade to a rev c.

Unfortunately that HDD Apple is using is a piece of crap. The SSDs should last the life of the MBAs. I have only read a few stories of SSDs going out on MBAs, and they weren't stock SSDs. I have read many tales of stock HDDs going bad... many.

In addition, I have two friends that had me help them upgrade their MBAs after their stock HDDs failed. It almost seems like the failure rate is too high and Apple should be doing something about it??? Something does seem fishy now that I really think about it. Anyone else notice a high rate of failing MBA HDDs reported on these forums?

At least you own MBAs, the absolute most incredible computer ever. I love them! I believe they're worth every penny of the premium even though they're "only" 1.5 lb. lighter as the 13" MBP advocates exclaim.

I agree about the Airs -- even after 2+ years, I still relish the feel of that baby every time I crack it open.

I also agree about the HDDs, and don't think I'd ever go with another stock version. Are there any non-stock HDDs that work with the B/C Air, and might be more reliable? Other than refurbed Apple drives, they seem awful hard to find.

(To clarify, this would not be a main machine, I'd just like to get it up and running as a backup/family loaner/etc., so I don't want to dump all that much money into it.)

Failing that, I'm considering going for the 64G Runcore, but would like to weigh all options.

Maybe the Air's generate - and not dissipate - too much heat for the hard drives to handle well.

A happy conclusion: I took the Air into the Apple Store to inquire about the options in person. The guy looked up the serial number, saw that it was only 109 days out of warranty and felt that was ridiculous. So: free hard drive!

And that is the kind of thing that keeps me coming back.

Congrats and kudos to Apple for excellent support!

The MBA was a true genius moment in engineering, and i love the display because well it isn't Matte, but also doesn't have the ****** Glossy screen, i would kill for a 15.4" MacBook Air, would make my Apple lineup complete so i can ditch this Rev A MBA, i need to be as mobile as possible without sacrificing too much power
