The old one is kind of a budget way to use a Mac, but this one price is totally another level but the hardware is not impressive at all.

I use windows, not mac.

I thought about buying the new mini if the price was like the old one, but it comes out with a super high price.

Lord knows how you’ve managed to get people to respond 21 times to these statements.

Do you have an actual question? If so, what is it?

I bought a 2018 mini with an i7/16GB RAM/256GB SSD for £1300 with a student discount. That compares to £2350+ for what I'd consider a very poor laptop. I already have a nice monitor, but even if I have to buy one I'd still get a mini. Love mine so far. Will probably pick up an eGPU in the near future so I can run 3 4K monitors.

I can open Preview, browse the internet, watch Youtube and such things. Oh and change the wallpaper...
Have you ever used a mac before? As a pc person it has taken me years of using my hubby’s imac to get used to the OS. I started in 2010 with videos and was just enchanted with the ability to make a video at 16x speed. How cool was that. Then I learned Filemaker Pro works wonderfully on the mac (although there is a pc version). With an ipad I learned that mail and contacts just works. I had used Outlook since before it was called outlook and that was getting to be glitchy, constantly having problems connecting to my imap accounts. For me, the macos was a natural step after 8 years of working with it here and there.

Yes, I did. One of my teacher in middle school had a Centris and after that, our class (graphic) did get a used Quadra aswell. I had the chance to use the computer 1-2 hour every week. That was in 1995/96 if I remember correctly.

Price wise the new MM 2018 isn't bad.

The mistake is comparing the entry price of the 2014 with the entry of the 2018.

Compare the two

Dual Core 1.4Ghz i5 vs Quad 3.0Ghz i3
500Gb 5400rpm HDD vs 128Gb Fast PCI-E SSD
HD5000 vs UHD 630
4Gb RAM (non-upgradeable) vs 8Gb RAM ( upgradeable )

Theres really no comparison.

Instead you realistically compare with the mid 2014

Dual Core 2.6Ghz i5 vs Quad 3.0Ghz i3
256Gb SSD vs 128Gb SSD
Iris 5100 vs UHD 630
8Gb RAM ( non-upgradeable ) vs 8Gb RAM ( upgradeable )

When prices like that then not much difference.

In terms of internal SSD space then my Mac Pro uses 27Gb with the apps installed that use on Boot Drive

My Mini uses even less as less apps installed.

Don't use the Boot Drive for Data, and all Data on External Drobo with the Mini.

128GB drive jobs should have been marketed as miniClouds, rather than Minis.
When I can add a USB stick and double my drive space, I'm pretty sure it means the company wants me to sign up for more room inside their cloud space.

Of course they do. And for most entry level consumers, cloud storage will be plenty fast and cheaper than paying for local storage.

I have to take issue with this. While Internet connectivity has improved significantly for most people it's considerably slower than local storage. For example: I have family that lives in the mountains where connectivity, baring hokey Satelite), ranges from 512Kbps (yes, kilobit) to 3Mbps making cloud storage a trial in patience. As for price well, maybe it's less expensive than Apple's local storage pricing. But, as the OP you responded to stated, a 256 GB thumb drive can be had for $30.00. A 256 GB SATA SSD can be had for $30.00. Both of which will outperform the majority of Internet connections to the cloud.

Finally, I find it ironic one of the selling points often mentioned for the Mini is the highest performing SSD speeds and then ignore that argument when discussing cloud based solutions when, for cost reasons, buyers scrimp on internal drive capacity.
