Anyone working with QuarkXPress 6.1 yet ? Does it really solve the problems of 6.0 ? I'll give it a last chance, then. Yeah, yeah, I know, you InDesign die hards, I should have switched a long time ago, but hey, QuarkXPress is the soft I worked with for years.

OK, I admit I haven't used Quark 6.0 or 6.1 yet but by the end of the week (2/20/04) I will have migrated my work MACs to G4-800 status and installed Panther along with the latest Quark. I grew up on Quark also, starting with v2 in the late '80s, and now use 4.1 on OS 9.2.2. 2 years ago I discovered InDesign and thought the same anti Adobe sentiments, "there is no way its a Quark killer... Yada Yada Yada". Then I started using it! I mean really putting it through its paces, and now I am a complete convert. The same way I switched from PC to MAC in '87 and never looked back (except we have about a 50% input of PC files so what the hell).
Now, getting back to your post, can you describe just what it is that you find buggy about Quark? what should I be looking for? Any input will help.

It's nice to hear from a fellow senior QuarkXPress user. ;-))
Well, I don't have strong anti-Adobe sentiments as I'm using (and enjoying) Illustrator and Photoshop all day long, but I guess it became a kind of way of living working with QuarkXPress. It's just been my way of working throughout the years. So all my docs are QuarkXpress, I know the program thoroughly etc.
It worked fine 'till 4.11, and even 5.0 did a more or less great job. 6.0 was (and I'm not telling a secret here) quite buggy. It crashes, it shows complete rediculous error messages, you can't save a doc more then once ...
I'm working in 6.1 now and so far everything seems ok. I suppose it's safe to use in production.
Maybe some reflections from you on Monday ?

DailyMac, I still use Quark extensively and still like it. I am trying to open everything in InDesign now and if all looks OK then I save it as an ID document, sometime (more than not though) Text reflows, Line and rule styles don't come out the same, and other minor irritations. With those files I just keep em in Quark.
I'll stay in touch as I go through the process of upgrading. My boss is all paniced over doing this, as he keeps telling me "every time we open a good file in an upgraded application, something goes wrong..." If he knew as much about printing as I have forgotten, I might listen to him :>).
On a side note, have you seen my post about Acrobat and PitStop?
I would really like to hear from someone with experience using them.

Hang in there Daily, my boss baulked at the price our vendor was quoting for our upgrade, at $1,600 for everything he wants another 10% off. The vendor is already at rock bottom but my boss is.... well the word scrooge comes to mind. I'll keep you posted.

I'll take a look at your Acrobat/Pitstop post. I've been working with it a couple of months ago and although it worked rather fine it was, comparing to the 'regular' way af working, quite a hassle to get the certified pdf's ok.

Can't help you on this one, Sparky. Since I'm on the other side of the line (creating the docs and making them ready for my commercial printer) I don't come across Word docs with embedded RGB pictures, although I'm familiar with that nightmare.
But as you can handle pdf's in Photoshop is there no workaround through there ?

Not all PDFs are easily opened in Photoshop or Illustrator for that matter. I constantly get "missing font" messages, primarily because my clients are not professionally or commercially trained in our trade. Remember that about 75% of small printing needs now comes directly from the corporate office instead of through agencies as in the past. These Customers who were literally once Secretaries and office assistants and have very little experience in preparing files for printers. Anyway unless I invlove Alpha channels Photoshop (as far as I know) still does not support spot color. and opening files in Illustrator when the fonts are not embedded properly creates its own nightmares. I'll wait for PitStop.
