The new minis announced today: is the RAM soldered on? Has anyone bought one and cracked it open?

I don't know, but I'm guessing that the RAM will still be user upgradeable. The reason? The case has not changed, so there is no need or advantage to changing the RAM slots.

I know the Apple site says "only upgradeable at the Apple online store", but I take this to mean that if you want Apple-branded RAM, then this is the only option. They are hardly likely to recommend you buy 3rd party RAM.

Let's see!

On the other hand, the memory is specified as LPDDR which as far as I can tell is only available soldered on. It does not come on SODIMMs.

I think it's very possible that the internals are originally designed for a fanless Broadwell system in a smaller form factor and perhaps (in light of Intel's Broadwell delay) recently modified slightly for Haswell in the current enclosure.
