The REAL big problem with the iPad is the lack of a centralised store for newspaper and magazine subscriptions. All publishers of magazines seemed to be having wet dreams about this device, yet no magazines were showcased and the NYT app wasn't really revolutionary...

The iPad was supposed to revolutionise the mag/newspaper industry... it didn't.
 
well just like iphone i bet this is something that will come in time. developing magazines and stores for them requires their assistance in the design phase and apple won't tip their hand like that. i am sure that a major OS update 6-12 months after launch will improve the book/magazine/tv/movie stuff considerably. still not on board yet though, but i don't think it was realistic to have a vision of the future of magazines ready and keep the device itself secret.

I'm sure Apple kept that in mind. The door is probably still open.

The release is still 2 months away so there should be plenty of time for the publishers to come up with something. They probably haven't had enough time with the iPad before today to have something to show at the keynote.
 
My thoughts exactly. Apple's answer to this was a stupid eBook store. Kindle has been a drastic failure in the education world because the eBook format is so inflexible. Apple could have done soooooo much better on that end.
 
kind of hard to do that when apple wouldnt let many people see/use the device.

give it time.

I agree with this. the NYT presentation was just something they made themselves in the App Store. I was expecting something centralized for viewing magazines like the iBook application.

Instead it will be just up to publishers to make use of it, without any standards. Certainly not what I was expecting on that front.

The App Store is where you will be able to subscribe to magazines. Standard print format is all but dead as a log in this medium. The big money will be in the hands of the media app developers.

I agree, Zinio already has an app for the iPhone and it will scale to the iPad easily. They have a fair share of popular magazines already in digital form. They or any other company with this type of distribution app will get fight for the space on the iPad's screen.

As stated already, were still 60 days out and Apple has plenty of time to work out deals with the publishers. This was just announced, not released, lots can change between now and then.
