I have noticed many many many people here complains about the lack of flash from the iPod, the iPhone, and more recently the iPad.

My question to you guys is this, HAVE you ever tried watching YouTube on your Mac fullscreen? On my MacBook, which somehow can manage to play HD QuickTime video just fine without fans going bazerk, and still keeping at a decent temperature. YET when I play a YouTube video fullscreen, which is just low res pile of garbage, for some reason, my MacBook turns very hot, and the fans are on full blast...looking at Activity monitor, Flash is a huge resource hog.

If Adobe can't get their act together with a COMPUTER platform, what makes you think they would do any better on iPod/iPhone/iPad? I say screw Adobe, and Apple was right not to support that junk.

So, My question to the public, if Adobe can't code flash for the Mac, why should Apple trust them with their mobile devices? And ever iteration of Flash, seems to be WORSE on computer resources.

I have a 400Mhz G4 sitting downstairs for kids to play on, and it plays DVDs just fine, and watches QuickTime video just fine, but try some YouTube on it and its stutter city.

I just have to get this off of my chest. Anyone who says Flash is required and continues to make websites in something that is very sloppily put together should be punished. So, Does seeing crappy coding from Adobe make ANY OF YOU rethink Flash?

Flash sucks.

The only reason people complain about it is because some sites they visit use it. Nobody is complaining about flash because it is good, or the world would miss it if it went away.

If sites changed from flash to other methods tomorrow to provide video streaming 95% of the people complaining about not having flash would never say another word.

Flash sucks. The people complaining about it need to contact these websites they can't live without and tell them to improve their sites and get rid of flash.

This is exactly is. The Flash experience basically sucks on the Mac. And because it's Adobe's proprietary little island, Apple can't fix it.

First-hand accounts of iPad use say it's extremely responsive, and it's managing this with a CPU probably about on par with what was in G4 PowerBooks ~5 years ago.

Anyone remember those being extremely responsive? Yeah, not really. Apple has obviously invested a huge amount of effort in software optimization for the iPad to get that kind of responsiveness. And with direct multi-touch interaction, fluid response is very important to the entire user experience of the device. If Flash sometimes stalls out page loads for 10 seconds (which it manages to occasionally do even on the $6000 Mac Pro towers we've got at work), Apple doesn't want it anywhere near their mobile platforms.

Well flash works great on really old windows pc's. So it's not flash per say but the mac version has problems. Actually I have found using flash on mac pro it does not use that much power at all except once in awhile something will happen that causes safari to use 100% of the CPU even after I stop using A flash site. It won't go away untill I close safari. Never happens with firefox. So it may be just apple trying sabotage flash.

Do some searches on choppy Flash video. You'll get lots of results for both platforms. Adobe does finally have hardware-accelerated H.264 decoding in the most recent version of Flash for Windows (not on the Mac), but a) this took them way too long and b) it won't work with any of the other video codecs still in common use for Flash video playback.

Putting on my web developer hat for a second... Flash is the last remaining proprietary format still widely used on the web. Web developers mostly hate it. It's important to remember that Flash content isn't 'native' to the web at all. It appears within web pages, yes, but it's not composed of tags, it can only be interacted with via JavaScript in certain specific ways, it requires proprietary tools to create and edit, and integrating it with content management systems, etc. is a big hassle. HTML5, SVG, Canvas, CSS3 Animation and JavaScript are a much better approach going forward, for both consumers and web developers. These are real web technologies that work natively the way the web works.

Personally, I'm glad that Apple has the courage to take some heat in the short term for helping Flash along on its way out the door.

Flash would be nice, but puffnstuff makes a good point. I think the biggest sites, if they haven't already, will adapt to Flash-less devices like the iPhone and iPad.

I Can run multiple videos on youtube at the same time on my Imac do i ever need to no but i can... i think 1 non-multitasking machine could handle flash.

Why do people keep saying flash is just for video?

When the iPhone was first coming out most web video was wmv or QuickTime.

It was only the last couple of years when flash really took off with video.

You gotta remember flash is more for animation and interactivity.

Now what program can I use to create vector animations and multimedia websites with html5? Is there anything like Flash Creative Suite for html5?

Do you guys just like plain text websites?

+100,,, no,,, 1000

As others have pointed out, it's not really flash per say that we are defending just that if the ipad is suppose to be a great web browsing machine should we be limited to what sites we can go to??

Also, apple fans should not be complaining about proprietary control of things, apple is the worst for that!!

The simple reality is that the device which is being marketed as the "best internet browsing experience" can't even simply display a load of websites.

The rest is useless tech bla-bla which the average user should not be worrying about.

Ok I'm thinking back to like 1999/2000 ish, when Adobe Flash was MACROMEDIA FLASH.

Apple.mac was the thing to use with it and they seemed to get along well back then.
I wonder where they went wrong.

Now that Apple.mac has all its apps and grew big nuts, they want to **** on the people that made me want to get a mac in the first place.

Flash sucks but sometimes you need to go to bed with the devil.

Like Adobe said, 75% of the video on the web is in flash. I can't run hulu on my pos netbook. I am sure the ipad can do it. Also Facebook apps use flash. Perhaps you have heard of it. Even NYT uses flash. If I am going to buy a tablet COMPUTER I want the whole Internet.

People complain about the iPad lacking Flash because for them, the internet consists of porn sites and Farmville.

Well said! That's going into the history books as being one of the best quotes on this forum.

BTW Hulu will eventually come out with an App for the mobile platform. So people please stop using Hulu as an example of why we so dearly need Flash. Hulu isn't stupid enough to miss out on a huge market like the iPhone. And eventually more websites will be moving to HTML5, so all this BS about flash running the whole internet will be a thing of the past. Think ahead people. So what if you can't watch your streaming porn for a little bit; the time will come eventually in a very optimal manner.

This, Flash is more then used for just playing videos. It provides developers with a way to deliver Rich Internet Applications directly to the browser, which is why Apple wants to kill it. It goes against their business model of the App store.

The real reason for blocking flash is clear.

Don't worry about the pornsites.
They will be early to adopt the new standards.

These rich internet applications are geared towards being operated with mouse and keyboard.
I'll let you in on a secret: the iPad has neither.

So, of course the whole discussion is only about Flash as a movie player.

While this is true today, it won't be in, coincidentally, in 2 months when Flash 10.1 is out:

Flash 10.1 Multi Touch demo
Flash 10.1 running on Smartphones and Netbooks
