Napster returns to the internet scene with a new beta program-and they want your credit card numbers.

The files will be in .nap format which means they will expire if you discontinue your membership. Also the files will be "tethered" to your computer so that the files can not be transfered to other computers or devices.

and one more thing no macs allowed.

a while ago, and now we need your help in kicking the tires.
Register a free account now. The more you use the new software, the
better the new Napster will be.

The Napster beta program is designed to test our technology. The
music selection is extremely limited. When we launch, we'll have a
huge catalog of songs for you to choose from.

too true. napster never created a mac version though so i suppose its not surprising. macster was great though even after napster gobbled it up.

i dont have too much time to play with the new napster right now (installed it on vpc5) so i was wondering what everyone elses impressions are.

my first impressions (based on one minute looking at the program without trying any of the features) is that they seem to be trying to shove too much into napster. its a instant messenger, music archive, and music player all in one. seems a bit excessive to me, but then again these are just my first impressions.
 
Napster's back.. It'll never be as popular, even if they start it up for a mac. I dont wanna start a fight over if mp3's are stealing or not, but there are plenty of other places to get mp3's for free, without them being tethered or stuff like that. I wonder if Napster will actually survive...
 
LimeWire does the trick. Slow - yes - but it's free all the same.

BTW: Isn't it funny that Apple advertises iPod on LimeWire? Afterall, isn't their commercial tagged with "Don't steal music?"
 
Limewire crashes on me way too much when I use osX...has anyone tried sputnix? i've found way more songs there and the speed isnt as bad.

does anyone know whats happened to aimster? Their website www.aimster.com redirects you to www.madster.com, and i can't find anywhere there to check for a new version of either the mac or pc version of their software. What's up there?
 
That's what I use, Limewire... It is slow, like others have said, but oh well...

As far as aimster, I believe it was over the summer, it was shut down completely, like napster, but with no chance to reopen. Its gone.. Sorry.. I'd go with Limewire

liquor companies also advertise "don't drink & drive" knowing damned well that people are going to do it anyway...

Sputnix aka... Audiogalaxy

You guys need to use Audiogalaxy. It is really fast and you can find virtually any song you want there. I have been using it on my Mac since this past summer. Just goto VersionTracker and get sputnix, and set up an account at Audiogalaxy's web site.
 
In my opinion shutting down Napster was a bad move by the music industry. If Napster hadn't started charging I probably wouldn't be downloading old Babylon 5 episodes as well as music off of Gnutella right now.
 
File sharing

I don't think anyone cares what program they use or what it is called. All people really want is the ability to share files. They shut down Napster, so 5 more sites spring up. If they shut down those 5, 10 more will show up...and so on. The US government started this whole internet thing by allowing the commercial and private use of the ARPANET. The only way they can prevent "illegal" file sharing now is to destroy the infrastructure of the internet itself. Good luck.
 
I'm soo mad at the record industry at this point for their high prices and unsuccessful yet expensive attempts at copy protection, that no matter who offers what, I refuse to pay for any music on the internet. I am not saying that I will stop buying CDs. A lot of my music tastes are classical and jazz anyway, and those high quality music labels are not guilty of the infringements of the Big 5, and I will continue to support them for their high quality product. But enough of my ranting and raving...

Forget paying for napster. If you download Mapigator off over version tracker, it lists all available opennap servers, and if you go to their website, you can download a version of napster that will allow you to connect to any available open nap servers using the Napster software, it's great. The first search I made was....METALLICA :), and I got the max 100 hits for it. Back in business. Morpheus was one of the few PC programs that I was jealous of.

Another option, although I haven't had a chance to use it yet is Drumbeat. It is a similar program to Mapigator I think, although it claims that it lets you connect to ALL available open nap servers at once. Here's a quote from their webpage at http://www.drumbeat.info

personally I do not like the quality of mp3's.

Sometimes for those hard to find tracks there is not much else. So when I can't get what I need at the store or I want ot preview something, then I will go for an mp3.

Limewire is getting better and better everyday as more people start using it!

The speed s a bit of a pain though.

ps. Oh ya, I also like ot support the artists buy actually buying their music, or going to their concerts.

i totally agree bugster. and thanks unreg. i'll check out drumbeat. i used to use limewire a lot but the newest version has given me some problems so im waiting for the next revision. but mostly i agree with buggy about mp3s. all of the mp3s i have i ripped myself and used very high quality. i download mp3s occ***ionally but always end up deleting them because of a lack of tags or poor quality.

i think mp3s have done a lot for harddrive tech though. although most people with super large drives are probably video editors i cant imagine the incredible increase in hard drive size without normal consumers demanding more space for their 10 gig + mp3 collections. the promised 400 gig drives of 2003 will truly wow me.

i remember when i bought my first external hard drive. i was in the store debating between a 1 gig and a 2 gig and the store clerk convinced me to go with the 1 gig since i could NEVER fill even 1. he was right... the thing would start cranking out some nasty sounds whenever it got full... but somehow i dont think this is what he meant.
 
yeah...

yeah... the whole mp3 quality thing is a problem.. but i hate it for another reason.. it seems like every other mp3 i download will have a skip in it, or have crappy quality, or occasionally, be a tottally different song under a different name... i wish there was a way of preventing that, but i guess you get what you pay for ;) Limewire all the way, free but slow..
 
Drumbeat kicks @$$

sorry, that unregistered post was me, I'm not used to bulletin boards allowing unregistered posts. The headphone forum where i post uses this same software, (so I feel right at home) but it makes you register before you post, oops.

But anyway, So I went home and downloaded drumbeat last night from http://www.drumbeat.info and it is awesome. For any of you who have been jealous of Morpheus (I haven't used Kazaa or eDonkey yet), this will put your PC friends to shame. Forget Mapigator and it's 100 Metallica hits. with Drumbeat, i was supposedly connected to all 100 or so of the available Open-nap servers (and all of each servers thousands of users) giving me access to something like 3.4 PETAbytes of inforamation, that's 3.4 MILLION @#$@!#$$ GIG. When my roommate logged onto Morpheus, it had literally 1/10 that.

Anyway, My first search was again for Metallica (They're my favorite band, but god do I hate them). I got 1,400 results before I stopped the search. Next, I searched for Shrek and Monsters Inc. I'm actually about to go finish watching monsters Inc. :) it doesn't have as FINE a search criteria as Morpheus did, but hey, it's for a Mac, and i honestly think it's better. Right now it's only available for cl***ic, but hey, it's worth it, and an OS X version is on it's way. I can't wait.
