The Scanned Film Photography Thread

These are some photographs that I took with my Nikon N55, Ilford HP5 400 Film, and developed in a darkroom with Ilford Multigrade IV RC Paper (pearl). I scanned them with an Epson Perfection 2480 Photo Scanner (not the best I know but it's all I have access to). These were all developed as 8X10's.

These images have not been manipulated digitally other than scanning them in and adjusting the black & white d/t the scanner turning them green.......and sizing down of course.

I really enjoy creating images and shooting rather than finding an image already in it's place or getting "lucky" with an image.

I'm seriously considering buying a DSLR in the next 3 or 4 months, but I really love the darkroom and I'll miss that aspect once I do.

Those are some really good shots and prints. Digital simply can't quite compare to some good film and great printing techniques. I love my D50, and it is very useful for many applications, but I still prefer film and carry my F4 just about everywhere I go.

I just started using some HP5+ instead of my normal tri-x and have been very happy with the results. These shoots really show what it can do.

I'm lazy however, and typically just can my negatives in and then use photoshop. However, if I really like the shot, I'll go make and 8.5 x 11

I shot this with a Sears KSX body and a Pentax 50mm, on Ilford FP4 125 film. Enlarged in the darkroom onto Ilford paper. Darkroom is fun for some things. I really enjoy the digital process better, though.

I really like that shot, I think I remember seeing it on here before, a long time ago and liking it then too. The blown highlights on the dress look great in this photo.

I really like the 1st photo you posted shieldyoureyes. To me portraits should be like that.....all too often portraits are poses that do not capture a "real" moment. That shot makes me believe that she is responding to something and you happened to photograph her response.

I like to collect old slides and use an old projector to create a background and lighting. I then use shadows, props, or people to add to the image for photographing. It works well with black and white but not so much with color. It's also fun to look at old slides that people just throw away from 30 years ago

I have been putting off scanning most of my old archive of 35mm negative and slides. Just saving up to buy a Nikon CoolScan 4000 or 5000 and using the Digital ICE(?) noise and scratch filter that supposedly very good at removing dirt and scratches.

Anyone use either of these scanners?

Nope but I wish I had one. I'm using a 'cheap' Epson 3590, not great for prints larger than 4x6, but great for web and screen use.

Thanks for your comments then . As for equipment, I wouldn't have a clue unfortunately, but I don't remember anyone in my family being a photographer other than me so it was likely just a cheap film camera.

There was some restoration needed in photoshop to bring out the quality, but I enjoy doing that and bringing old shots back to life.

all shot on a Holga using medium format film (i think the B+W is XP2 and the color is Kodak ultra 400?) and scanned directly from the negatives, color corrected in photoshop.

My Epson 4870 has digital ICE and can do 20 35mm negs in one shot. It works great but man is it ___s_l_o_w___ ICE takes forever to run on my little G4. By "forever" I mean go away for an hour or so and let it run.

Also ICE does not work of B&W negs. The silver blocks the IR light

What a great idea. I've got a $25 Russian TLR. Did you have to make a paper backing for the film. Did you tape over the hole in the back that lets yo see the exposure number?

What does the format come outt to? 60x24mm?

Make me want to go out and shoot film again. But I'm thinking about 4x5 format now. My Epson 4870 will do up to 4x5 negs

sorry for the late reply, but yes, they are out 6cm long, I taped all over the hole on the back and it still leaked light on half my frames, making them unusable. If you are going to do it, use tin foil, then tape to make sure absolutely no light can come in. To count the frames, it ends up being about 32-36 "clicks" of the film advance to equal one frame.

Bartelby - Those are some great cemetery shots. I love how busy and chaotic #1 is, yet the lighter angel adds a focus point for the viewer and calms the photo down.
