Apple Sillicon gets updated every year thanks to the iPhones. The A15 coming later this month should give us an indication of M2 SoC that will be used on the 2022 MBA.

Keep an eye on the A15 SoC at the Apple event.

The new cores will be used in the new 16” and 14” MBP announced next week, actually. But whatever.
When a Mac ever been released in September?? Its always been October or November

“Hey everyone! Enjoy the new top-of-the-line macbook pro, with slower single-core performance than iPhone 13!”
Yes, I agree that it doesn’t make sense to debut something slower than the iPhone 13, unless they can push the clock speed up just enough to match the A15.

Personally, I wish they’d get on with the larger iMac.

He said the cores that will be used in the new Macbooks will be announced next week. The Macbooks will be announced later. Apple will announce a new chip and then talk about the performance boost over the previous generation iPhone. A thousand youtubers will then extrapolate that gain vs M1 to estimate the performance of the upcoming Macbooks.

cmaier, will this 14% be partially from widening the core from 8 to 9 instructions per clock? Or other enhancements? It’s been several years since they added width.

If I knew I couldn’t tell you.

If I didn’t know, I would guess that they will achieve the performance increase by other means (deeper issue and retirement queues, better branch prediction, faster clock while reducing leakage current, etc.)

Next year, then ?

Oh, no, it could be this year. Like I said, if I knew, I couldn’t tell you.

But if I didn’t know, then I’d guess that 14% is too small an improvement if they did that, because they would only do it if they could keep the extra pipe busy, so you expect like 9-10% or more improvement just from that, *plus* the normal other improvements they make.

It would be nice if true but I suspect it doesn't matter for nearly all customers.
The A series will matter heavily to us the tech nerds in this forum as it correlates to M series performance if we are to scale it up

I think the world is big enough for many players to bring out competing products.

Apple has never been about competing with others. Their MOs, as far as I can tell, is to bring out the best product they can based on what they think is best in class. If what they do is going to dominate the world, good for them. If not, I don't think it's going to stop them from improving. Intel sure didn't stop them from innovating with the Macs.

The Ax and M1 showed the world what Apple is capable of. I for one am excited to see what's coming out next, tho. I'm getting a little impatient :p

There will always be detractors based on biases and preferences and that's OK. And Apple has always been compared to every company in the world even when Apple is not competing in the categories they are being compared against. As I said, the world is big enough to accommodate everyone.

Would it matter if you had to buy something right now? Or next month? The typical person buys a computer to get something done.

He didn't mention anything about their release, merely their announcement. The release will most likely be in October or November. That sucks, but we've been waiting for them for so long, what's another couple of months? Assuming the announcement is next week, though, it will be nice to know exactly what we'll be getting for our hard-earned dollars.
