I came to this forum in 2007 because I was interested in switching to Mac. I have been happy with Win 7 but my machine is getting old and I may be looking to upgrade. I have used Macs but that was a while ago. I had a G3 laptop and miniMac with the G 4 processor. The laptop died and for what it was it was not worth fixing. The Mac Mini was slow and crashed too much.


Win 8 sounds like a nightmare.

A couple of things that keep me from getting mac is that my HP running Win 7 has been very reliable and to get a similar Mac I would have to pay 3 times as much.

As to Mac hardware vs PC hardware I think that the PC has an advantage and you get more bang for the buck.

I have been working with various DAWs and what I have found reading recording forums is that DAW software is just as buggy on Mac as it it on PCs. I know that Microsoft does some really stupid stuff but they did get it right with XP and 7.

IMO Apple should offer its OS for PCs or drop the price of their computers. That would put a hurt on Microsoft. Currently the Chinese are making a version of the Mac albeit illegally.

Seems kind of dumb for anyone to focus on PCs at this point, IMO.

IMO, the markets that are replacing the PC market are tablets and smartphones. Seems like everyone's already putting a hurt on Microsoft in these two markets.

You also have to remember that up until just a few years ago, a 3 year old PC was old and obsolete. Now you can keep a PC for 6 years and it still performs "well enough" for the majority of tasks - Facebook, word processing, email, etc...

The fact that sales dropped doesn't mean that the PC is losing marketshare as much as it means it finally matured into a commodity item.

Apple is a premium product company. They are not Dell or HP looking to sell to consumers looking to spend absolutely the least amount of money on a computer. Think of Apple like BMW, Mercedes, etc. You can get a 300 HP Chevy Impala for $40,000. That's a full size sedan that has a huge interior for passengers and a big trunk. BMW's that cost $40,000 are the 3 series and below that are compact or subcompact cars. No matter how much you beg BMW to make the 3 series cheaper or a full size car for $40,000, it's not going to happen. BMW isn't interested in the mainstream car market. Same case with Apple particularly with Macs.

Plenty of vendors are still selling Windows 7 models - or Windows 8 Pro models, which can downgrade to Win 7 Pro.

I came here because I got a warning regarding a security breach to my email because of this site. The other stuff is why I didn't go with a Mac and why I would if they were properly priced or of the OS were available for PC. As far as I am concerned at this point the Mac hardware is pretty much a PC. They look nice but I still don't see why they sell for so much more and have similar power.

The security leak was discovered by my email provider. 2 months later I get a warning from this site.

They sell "for so much more" because Apple's products are considered worth it.
Not only you get a solid support system, where you can solve your problems in a matter of minutes sometimes, but you get to use the much appreciated OS X.

So you get less computer that is less popular and you have to pay more for it and due to it being less popular it is more expensive to be fixed? There are a lot of cars that look like BMWs so I can place a badge on one and call it a beamer. If I were computer savvy I could probably get the Mac OS to run on a PC and if I put the Mac logo on it for all intents and purposes I would have a Mac.

I noticed after the Vista debacle the number of Macs visiting my websites increased substantially but now it is back to what it was. Maybe it's just me but if I were running a company that made a product that was as good or better than the competition I'd do what it takes to get people to buy it on a large scale.

Actually in reality new Win 7's are scarce.

As to 8 it got lousy reviews. Just Google Windows 8 sucks and then google Windows XP or Windows 7 sucks and see what you get. Then google Win 8 is great and Win 7 is great.

You used the wrong analogy!

BMWs are junk

Also, Apple also only exists in a very niche market for desktop and laptop computers. If you want high performance, Apple is out of the question.

Also for non joking reasons. You talk like there is only 1 type of PC out there. Lots of PCs are lower end than an Apple machine, but lots of PCs are also much higher end and expensive than Apple machines.

Personally, as much as I enjoy my Macs. I cannot think of one think that OSX can do that Windows cannot.

Having made the switch about a year ago, I can tell you that the experience has been so much better. When I had some issues with my PC a few years back the Software company blamed the hardware and the other way round. When it is all made by the same company you don't have those issues. It is the fastest most stable computer I have ever owned. Plus it fits with all my other devices (see signature) so well. As they say around here. Once you go Mac you never go back.

I want the maximum of software for my computing experience. So I have a couple Macs, a high end windows rig, and I run a decent Debian Linux Rig.

So the Mac OS is better. Everyone knows that but the hardware isn't. If the Mac OS were available for PCs during the Vista nightmare Apple could have put a huge dent in Microsoft. The fact that 8 stinks could have driven a lot of PC users to the Mac OS.

7% of the page view on my site are Mac. 71% is PC. During the Vista debacle it was 12%. Opera has also surpassed Safari.



The leak probably happened much sooner and was discovered 11/11.

Yes but your probably not the typical Computer user. I have PC's at work and a laptop at home (which I never use). But I find my iMac a better place to be. Windows PC's are not as stable in my experience. I have not had one crash on my Mac in a year. I could not say the same for my PC at work (or previous ones I have owned at home). If you need OSX, Windows and Linux then you are in the minority. The point the Op was making is they are over priced and Apple should release OSX for PC users. I personally think they are going for quality not quantity. Why should they release there software so a different company can profit from selling the hardware? The day they do that is the day they decide to stop making Macs and I can't see that somehow.

As others will tell you, Apple has no interest in selling OS-X to use on other computers--they are primarily in the hardware business--at least when it comes to their profit margin. So they give away OS-X knowing that it will only run on their hardware (excepting the few hackintosh machines out there).

Apple makes a lot of toys now. The computer is a tool. Design, engineering, business, writing, and science gets done on computers.

As to Mac hardware being better, it uses most of what you find in a PC but with the PC you have more choices and more price points.

As to Apple selling hardware I would think that there would be a much higher profit margin on selling a PC version of their OS that would allow people to have a dual boot computer.

And yet more people use it than people do with every version of OS X combined. Stuff has changed, which makes people uneasy. Once you've figured it out, you find it is actually much better than Windows 7.

Anyway, Apple selling OS X on PC? $100 (your price, not mine) for OS X on PC... OR a minimum of $599 upto $3000+ (not including Mac Pro) for a Mac. Though maybe you should go tell Apple your master plan? I'm sure the experts there would appreciate it.

As for the 275m computers sold? That figure includes Mac sales and it may well also include tablet (iPad) sales.

Finally, "and that is just the beginning". 275m people are not suddenly going to cough up $100 dollars for OS X. Only a fraction have the money and ability to do that.

Anyway, this thread is just wrong.
