The staggering cost of Apple's iApps

The cost of using iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD and, sometimes, iTunes, is the incredible amount of time it takes to do the simplest thing.

OK, maybe they aren't simple things, but I have Final Cut Pro 3 and it does amazing things on my 800Mhz 17" iMac and the interface and response is snappy as anything. Obviously I paid a lot, even at educational price, for this software - so am I paying for programmers who know how to make software that doesn't grind to a halt every few seconds? Are the iApps programmed by the 'B team'?

The sad thing is that Movie Maker 2 seems to have overtaken iMovie 3 - it does it all, and without the pauses and beachballs.

I'd rather use FCP than either, but sadly my upgrade to the amazing version 4 will actually cost me (or my school - fat chance!) more than the original eduactional price for FCP3. FCP3 is not perfect, and it is sad to be cut out of the development.

I wouldn't use anything other than a Mac, but perhaps if they completed simple instructions and tasks a bit quicker Apple would sell more hardware and wouldn't be trying to rake in the profits by killing software competition and charging outrageous prices for upgrades.

OK, I admit it, I'm peeved.
 
FCP is not an iApp so i am having trouble seeing what your trying to say here.

FCP is cheaper then just bout every other NLE system on the market and not just by a few dollars, we're talking thousands here. And look at the feature set you get with FCP 4 Cinema tools alone would be another 1000 dollars but you probably don't use it. So lets look at Soundtrack 300 bucks by itself and basicly Logic with a different interface...Logic is 700? bucks i'm thinking maybe more. So your getting a huge value with FCP 4 almost twice as much as FCp3 was worth for the same price. And now your saying that it's too expensive for you? Come On here be reasonable.
 
I have no earthly idea what you're talking about. iTunes, in particular, is great. iPhoto is amazing (take off the drop shadow behind the thumbnails, it's much faster). Far better than any alternative. and iDVD...try doing anything like it with any other basic 3rd party app.

I might agree about iMovie. I, personally, find it to be far more difficult to use than FCP. But if I knew absolutely nothing about video editing, I would think iMovie was the tops.

Obviously, he compared FCP to the iApps, in this case iMovie, but didn't say anything about FCP being an iApp
 
It is disappointing that the educational FCP3 cannot be upgraded to an educational FCP4. Teachers and students who want to keep up with the new software are expected to throw out FCP3 and buy Final Cut Express or FCP4 at the full educational price, since there is no upgrade.
 
Umm, I think all he is saying is that if Apple can make such a kick butt app as FCP4 that works as efficiently as it does, why have they messed up imovie so badly? The same can be said about DVD Studio Pro and iDVD. His point is not the features, simply that the iApps crash or give you the beachball A LOT (iphoto and itunes excluded, they are great). I can agree with his point.

On a side note, you can get Logic Platinum for $499 and Soundtrack, while awesome for loops, is NOT Logic with a different interface. Logic is massive in what it can do. Soundtrack doesn't even have MIDI capabilities. There is no way Apple will let Soundtrack cut back the sales of Logic, which they own as well.
 
Why should Apple put big money into free applications? It takes time and energy to make something truly amazing and they're all pretty easy to use for first-timers.

If you consider that iDVD is $49.00 and the other 3 in iLife are free, it's still a good deal. This also leaves room in the middle for some competition, if Apple hasn't scared them away.

As far as Final Cut Pro (or Express) contrasts to iMovie--if they were equally easy or efficient, why would anyone buy Final Cut Pro? From what I've seen of FCP, it's a lot for the money, and so is iMovie.
 
Having used both iMovie 2 and iMovie 3, I have to say that I much prefer iMovie 2 for its stability. iMovie 3 offers no enhancements of real import and crashes infinitely more (thousands of crashes in 3, zero crashes in 2. 20,243/0 is infinity).

Could somebody please direct me to one of the utilities that allows a user to install a single package off of the Jaguar install discs? Thanks.
