Ok, here is the situation, my dumbass brother has a first gen mac mini, the cheaper one, and he has had it since it came out. Being "Protective" as he really isn't, he put a password lock on it, preventing anything from updating/installing unless he puts in the pw. Now, he just got his 3g iphone, and wouldn't u know it, he forgot his pw. this wouldn't normally be a problem, exept that he also lost his install disc-that being the only way to get the pw removed. so now he has this horribly scratched 3g iphone, that is still on the firmware that was in it since it left the factory. Please, can anyone tell me how he can fix this problem, so he can stop bugging me?

all I have found was some way to mess with command lines, and I am not too proficient with that, and he can barely turn his iphone on. so maybe someone has a step by step run through on how to do it?

its hard to give the steps when we dont know if it is stolen or what not, no offense. posts like these generally recieve very little support for that very reason

the fact you havent been around here much too doesnt give you too much credibility right off the bat

just google for it as i dont really know off the top of my head

restart your computer, hold down Command-S.
( Basically, you hold down the command-s key when powering on. The command key has a little apple symbol on the lower left. It is between the alt/option key and the space bar. On a PC keyboard, it will be the windows key, I think. )
When you get the prompt, type in the following:

/sbin/fsck -fy [Enter]
/sbin/mount -uaw [Enter]
rm /var/db/.applesetupdone [Enter]
reboot [Enter]

Basically the last 3 are the important ones.

Forces the computer to think it is booting for the first time and asks for all the info again, including a password.

www.apple.com/support/ also has several other methods of password reset.

Thanks for the help, and to the guy who implied the mac was stolen, he didn't steal it, he's just a dumbass. He even has the box and empty cd holder that should always hold the cd.

i didnt imply, just said we dont know the scenario. you wont believe how many threads get asked to reset passwords on machines that dont belong to them, stolen or owned by schools for instance, etc

hope everything works out though

Call Apple or go to an Apple Store.

Definitely... Call Apple and have them walk you through it.

Agreed on both parts. Actually, if you call 1-800-APL-CARE they should send you new install discs for that model.

Or you can take it to an Apple Store after making a Genius bar appointment and they should just slip the discs in and walk you through it free of charge.

The people that say Apple Care and the Genius Bar aren't effective places for technical support are really stupid. Go to them, they actually DO, do their jobs.

I was visiting my relatives and one has a MacBook from school and lost her password (one account, auto log in to that account).

Took me about 5 minutes with google to find how to reset the password via command line and single user mode.

Not sure how to do it if your DAB can't be trusted with command line and doesn't have the disks.

tell your brother to solve his own problems. You may wish to point out to him that he doesn't seem to be bright enough to own these devices.

better yet take your brothers iPhone and give him a LG Migo then take his mac mini and give him a OLPC. So he really can f**k it up or until he learns how to use google like a normal person.

Yea, clearly those are the types of answers that make this forum great! I mean, what do people expect, for them to come here and get help from time to time? Out of this world!
