That vista machine had 2 500G drives, why would the user back up to an external drive? Why not transfer between hdd to hdd.
1TB of space only using 150G maybe 200G. IMO something doesn't seem right there.
I have upgraded 2 vista machines with much lesser specs and it didn't take anywhere close to 11 hours to upgrade both of them.

Dont get me wrong I actually quite like Win 7 been using the RC since its release and my other machine is updating at the side of me now to the GM that arrived today, but my point is that -

It s the release day with a senior MS VP and the thing doesnt behave! Stabbing at the screen to drag around windows unsuccessfully, zooming that turns out to rotate by mistake then rotate doesnt react and then reacts spinning it round 2 twice just thought it wasnt really the best showcase of the next best thing!.. but it is very funny to watch..

I'm guessing the link is to Mythbusters so i'll refrain as i think thats in our current series in UK and i dont want to spoil it!

I see Windows as being akin to a Ford yep there good enough and serve thier purpose (I also like Ford so dont misinterpret that either had a Focus ST and an RS) but Mac's are like Porsche's thier fast and sleek and if you can stomach the expense they enrich your life.

If you're going to go for the car analogy - then imagine two cars.

Identical engines.
Identical chassis
Identical suspension
Identical wheels
Identical stereo
Identical brakes

But one has trick paint job and is 50% more expensive.

You are obviously unaware of how archaic and outdated the underlying concepts of Windows are. And I don't care if you claim to have never had problems. That's not representative of a lot of other people's experiences.

Another Analogy

I kinda like the Car analogy, but feel that it does a disservice to Ford.
I mean, Really! What has Ford ever done to be compared to WINDOWS?

So here's another one: (Analogy, that is)

Windows is to Mac as Star Trek Movies are to Star Wars movies.

Why is Windows like Star Trek movies? (not the TV series)

See - I've never liked a Star Wars movie. I walked out of Ep 1 and demanded my money back. It was shallow - over produced - poorly scripted. It was Lucas's wet dream - on celluloid. Much like Apple is the wet-dream of Jobs. It's OK - as long as you want exactly what he's going to give you.


Oh - and VirtualRain - my 'Lexus' has spent far far longer at the dealership getting repairs than my 'Toyotas'. I'm finding Win 7 a far nicer place to be that OS X at the moment.

No. The situation Microsoft managed to end up with in regards to Windows meant that they could put out pretty much anything as long as it at least mostly worked, and sales would be largely the same. So that's what they did.

Except the Toyota and Lexus don't have the EXACT same parts. The Mac only differs with the outer paint job and the little instruments that tell you what's going on.

While they use the same drivetrain (eg. CPU, Memory, HD) and a lot of other parts, they differ on the choice of interior materials, finish and tech level (OS), exterior styling such as body style, wheels, tires, paint choices (Enclosure/Screen), and the dealership experience (Apple store vs. Best Buy).

I agree they both suffer from the same quality issues, but Lexus does sell a premium product and ownership experience at a premium price, just like Apple, while Toyota is a car for the masses just like PC's.

There's nothing premium about Mac's. It's just a matter of taste. INdeed, in terms of hardware, they're NOT premium. There's nothing premium about a lack of ports, a display adaptor that demands you pay more (and doesn't work), only one audio socket, and USB ports that are too close together.

That leaves the OS - and in my opinion, Win 7 offers just as good, if not a slightly better environment in which to do work.

fanboyism on both sides - I personally am a Mac user at home, and Windows at work - thats just the way it is.

Personally I hope Windows 7 works well - I wont buy it, but for those that do, I trust it will do what you need in as easy a way as possible - just as OSX (mainly) does.

Why the constant haranguing between win vs OSX still amazes me - I made a personal choice that I am happy with, as everyone else can with a Win platform

At the end of the day, the OS is just the intermediary between the Hardware and what I want to do (my applications) - nothing more
