I was thinking to myself today "Self? Why haven't you tried out that new Unreal Tournament game that Epic has been working on?" I must admit I panicked a little because myself answered back, and you know that's one of the signs of madness.

"Well, apart from not wanting to hose my Mac with pre-alpha software? There's running a game that's not optimized for OS X and that's probably gonna run like a slideshow!"

Well, I did download it. I went to the Unreal Tournament site, and got it, thinking that it would be unplayable, on my late 2012 iMac, just like Metro Redux is.

I couldn't have been more wrong. I had to reduce most of the settings, but I was able to set it for 1080p res , with FXAA on, and get what feels like between 25-35 fps!

It's looking amazing, and feels just like UT, like you''d imagine it would, given its pedigree! I've only jumped onto a few online games, but the match server works like you'd imagine, and lag is not there. It did crash out on me once, but that's it.

Try it! You'll love it!!

Glad to hear it is coming along nicely by the sounds of things. I am excited about this game but not in a hurry to play it just yet. I'm busy with some other games for the time being.

I hope they stick pretty closely to the classic formula and don't bog it down with feature bloat often seen in modern shooters. This being an arena shooter though hopefully that isn't go to be a problem.

I downloaded the Mac version a while ago. It's definitely still very unfinished, but well playable. I had similar experiences that I had to reduce the settings quite a bit to make it playable. I guess, it's far from being optimised in its current pre-alpha state.

How different is it from say UT 2003? I've played this game off and on since 1999, Quake and Unreal before that or in proximity, and Marathon, for 7 years before those, although I have the current version sitting on my iPad!

Wow. I wasn't even aware a new Unreal Tournament is coming out. The original UT is my favorite game. The atmosphere, map design, music, the weapons, gameplay... Aaaahhhh, I'm getting nostalgic.

Looking forward to the new UT, and hopefully it runs well on my late 2012 iMac.
