Wow. Tried this three times now, while at the same time trying to fix my 3GS which is also a complete mess after the iOS5.0 update. Not a great day for Apple's software QA department I guess

Honestly I'm inclined to believe that the first update available from the servers was corrupted. Which caused all the failed updates. Finally the correct update was loaded to some of the servers but those servers quickly became bogged down. In fact, it seems like all of Apple's servers are bogged down.
They really should've staggered these software updates.
Yesterday would've been perfect for 10.7.2 along with the iPhoto and Aperture updates.

The update failed on my apple tv twice and then it asked to be plugged into iTunes. No success with that yet.
I would wait for a while before trying to update again. Something is certainly busted on Apple's part.

I'm on my 6th attempt already. Luckily I'm still busy trying to sort out the car crash of an update on my iPhone. At least Lion updated OK on my Mac so one out of three worked.
Not successful for me either. I've tried three times so far. It loads the update, then after "step 1 of 2" it quits and informs me it was not successful.
After three hours, I finally got it installed (it failed twice as mentioned above, then told me it was going to take 6 hours to download). I ended up downloading the firmware on my Mac and restoring through iTunes. However, now I can't activate home sharing because the iTunes activation server is down. :roll eyes:
Not exactly a great way to launch a new cloud service, huh?
There's no way in hell I'm using the Apple TV remote to enter all my Netflix, Photostream, NHL, etc data. So, I'm giving up tonight.
I'll wait until I can activate home sharing and use the Remote.app tomorrow

I, too, had a bad experience in updating my Apple TV to the new upgrade. I received the prompt that an upgrade was available, and pressed the prompt to start it. After it downloaded the file, my Apple TV indicated that it needed iTunes and the light kept constantly blinking.
Luckily, the micro USB cable that I use for my Logitech wireless mouse to recharge worked fine with the Apple TV. It took about two and half hours to download the file from Apple on iTunes. Then it took more time to install the file onto the Apple TV.
I was glad this worked because I was afraid my Apple TV was dead. Once the file was installed, the constant blinking finally stopped. I reconnected the HDMI cable from the TV, and I was prompted to enter my information since it reset the Apple TV as a new device.
I hope in the future Apple will make sure their multitude of servers can handle the millions of iOS and MacOS devices that needed to be updated. I think they should have spaced these updates in a couple of days of each other. That way there would not have been so many frustrated users as I was.

No issues here
Apple was probably overly ambitious with it's simultaneous upgrades, but no issues for my atv2 upgrade the evening of 10/12/11. Same with upgrades to IOS for 3GS and iPad2, although both took hours each.
BTW, thanks to tipsters in another thread for the Airplay mirroring tips.

Are there multiple builds of iOS for each device, or do they have a single build that encompasses all devices? If the latter, it may make sense why things were not staggered.
I was running around my house yesterday trying to update an Air, an iPad, and a TV as well. It took me 4 tries on the TV. Everything else was smooth.

In New York, I tried the upgrade around 12:30 AM last night and everything went smoothly. Whole process took about 15 minutes. I did the ATV upgrade after my phone which took 4 hours because of the slow download. Still, everything working fine and I've been sending iMessages all day...
Yeah, count me among the fortunate ones. After trying to update my iPhone during the fiasco that occurred yesterday afternoon, I decided to wait until late last night for my other iDevices. I had one failed attempt on an Apple TV but the second try took less than 10 minutes and my other Apple TV went through on the first try (at about 1 AM EST).
I had the same issue and after 3 failed attempts I unplugged the ATV2 from power, let it reboot and tried again. Worked like a charm. I think the previous firmware version was actually pretty unstable as we've had to power it on and off a few times over the last few months to eliminate strange behaviors and lockups from the ATV2. Hopefully this new release is a little more robust. Cheers!

Everyone's experience may vary, but the lesson I take away is this:
Don't try and install a big operating system upgrade the same day as two hundred million other people do.
Wait around 18 or 24 hours, and you'll save yourself a peck of trouble.
