That's my guess, as he doesn't appear to be at Apple either - at least that's what Gruber alleges
I don't understand the move at all, if you want to leave a company you give 2 weeks notice. How could he not tell his friends at TheVerge he's leaving. I think he has alienated a lot of folks
I honestly just do not see the problem if his contract stipulates no compete, no disclosure, no this and that.. but a x week notice. That during negotiations with Apple you mention this and they surely didn't put him in a time-sensitive position where he had to lie about things, or include Apple in "ok, i will just .. not show up anymore.." kinda scheme. What's wrong with just saying to your current boss, who you do not have to disclose to that you're going for job interview, that you have been hired by another company and that your contract has a month or two notice (or whatever) and you collect some sick and vacation days and are outtah here (in good standing). They congrats you on the upgrade and wish you'd stay, write an article about it to milk more ad-income. And then Apple has someone they can trust and didn't waste time on. What's the big deal to just deal with it normally. Which tells me either he's just childish and has reasons to leave disgruntled and risk losing friendships and a future of great job positions, thinking he's the bomb and king of the world. Or the Verge knew about it and are covering their butt and throwing him under the bus. I truly believe both are very possible.
But it's not our business, it's his life, they are 'just' companies. He has to pay the bills for his family. Who knows what is actually going on. It's clear what happened is questionable, and I think he is gonna have a hard time explaining himself at his next job interview.
