I see this type of thinking quite beneficial to the laptop industry, where size and performance per watt is crucial.

Beneficial to the laptop industry, yeah, if the built in GPU is as good or better than the best available otherwise. If you can make a processor with a built in GPU that is as good but saves battery, then yeah I'll buy it.


I see this as good business for AMD considering their recent acquisition of ATI.


Of course for desktop models where it is possible to exchange the GPU this is not that important.

Meh. For ultra portables or maybe even a sort of power scaling (When you don't need major GPU horsepower it will power off the videocard and use the onchip GPU.) But chip makers have been talking up integration off pretty much all the various components on a system (Audio/NIC/modem/etc) for years and they have yet to do it. Personally I think this is AMD getting despirate. This coupled with 4 x 4 is a tide-me-over until they can roll out a response to the Core 2 that is expected to show up in 3rd/4th quarter '07.
Its an interesting idea nonetheless though.

Actually it kinda is and it just hit me. Go into a buisness environment and take a look at their computers. 99.9% of them will have onboard GPU's, most likely Intel GPU's too. (The rest being the graphics department usually.) You certainly do not need any type of major GPU to run MS Office/browser/e-mail/etc.
If they can integrate this onto the CPU it should decrease the cost, and prob the size, of the overall system. By how much is the question at hand though. *shrugs*
