OK- so here's the story:

I purchased my MBP on September 13 and it arrived around the 24th. I waited to open it until after the Showtime event. When I opened it, immediately I noticed a faint whine. I did some research and found that this was indeed a problem for some MBP owners.

So I sent it in via Apple Store 2 days later and got it back the following Monday. The problem appeared to be gone.

Then it came back.

I called again, and the woman on the phone said "all computers make noise." I countered, "Well the 15-inch that my roommate has doesn't. And certainly other brands do not make this specific noise." She said that since it is faint, and therefore it has to be relatively quiet when I hear the noise, that it wasn't a big issue.

But, after spending over 3 grand on it, I figured it was a pretty big issue. She said to take it into the Apple Store once again because she couldn't do anything more over the phone. The woman basically dismissed my problem as not enough of an annoyance to merit help.

Well, it went away shortly after. And the in last 2 weeks or so, it came back.

Now, this time, the whine goes away when I click on a slider that correlates to hardware (e.g. iTunes volume control, brightness control) and also goes away when I am scrolling using two fingers on the track pad. It still disappears when the camera is on.

So I am debating taking my MBP in again. If they replaced the logic board once, what could they do a second time? How do I know that they would solve the problem?

Obviously they have fixed it in the C2D, but I'm pretty sure they wouldn't give me a new C2D even if they replaced the logic board 3 times.

Should I take it in? Is it possible that they have finally fixed the problem? And if not, is it possible to get a C2D as a replacement?

Please back up your responses, because I have thought about this a lot and would like some detailed answers.

------In other news, my front left USB port won't recognize my camera or memory stick. And whenever I have an iChat video conference my input volume automatically changes from where I had it before (usually all the way up) to about 3/4.------

Unfortunately I do think you will be hit and miss with CPU whine. I just picked up a C2D Macbook, and I do also get some CPU whine. It's not enough to bother me yet, but if you do find the whine to be too annoying to deal with, take it back.

You spent your money hoping for a product you would be happy with, unfortunately you got a machine that suffers from a slight noise. You have every right to take it back, just keep in mind that it may happen with the next one you get too.

I highly doubt they would upgrade you to a C2D, but stranger things have happened.

Good luck with things, no one likes to go through this.

unfortunately, the 15" C2D i have has a slight whine, but i think of it more as a high pitched hissing noise. I have to stick my ear right to the left speaker/ambient light sensor to hear it.

from what i hear though, its less evident in the C2D models than the CD.
