Just talked to some lady at the corporate at&t store and she basically stated that they wont know ANYTHING until that small gap between 4:30 and 6:00, which is going to KILL ME! AHHHH, All I care about is being able to buy it, not worry about the contract yet, and leave, just like an ipod. And it better not be subsidized!!!

Call them. Ask to speak with supervisor. I would bet they tell you the same thing they told me a couple days ago: 2 year contract. One price. Doesn't matter if you have an existing contract. I guess one could consider it "subsidized", since they make the contract a purchase requirement, but there isn't any other pricing - so it's moot. My contract is up in September, so I obviously wanted to know if I could buy the phone. (https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/314198/)

edit: by "call them", I mean AT&T.

So my contract doesnt end for about a year and a few months, what will I have to do to get the phone? Just pay the $500? or will I need to extend my contract? I'm totally in the dark on all this. And what about apple removing the "2 year contract required" on all the commercials?

From what I understand, it doesn't matter.

Just adds 2 years to your contract. 4gb for $500, 8gb for $600.

It doesn't add 2 years to your contract. It supersedes your current one and starts on the date of purchase.

What I want to know is: Will Apple release the details of the AT&T contract 2 weeks (Monday), or 1 week prior to launch? Surely they'll give at least a week's heads up so people can plan and figure this all out. They're not going to have people in the store at 6pm asking "I want to buy a phone but what's the deal with the contract?" It would be a nightmare.

While I'm super-anxious about it, frustrated, and want to know NOW. I'm banking on this coming week for info. Or will have to wait 1 more week. I'm going to try to be patient. Which sucks. :)

This coming week or next week? Hmmm.....

Then I would need to pay a termination fee of my current contract, wouldnt I???

Not according to AT&T. The person I spoke with went off line a couple of times while investigating my situation (see my thread from previous post), so I have a pretty good feeling she got accurate information. I reiterated what she told me back to her several different ways to make sure we were both on the same page. Of course, no one will be absolutely certain until after they go through the process.

This sounds like its going to be madness at all the Apple Stores, wonder how they are going to handle it.

So if what everyone says is true, right now I can get an upgrade for free as my contract is up. So then I renew with that one, then when the iphone is out in two weeks, I can just buy that and keep my old one to sell on ebay to recoup some of my costs?

Only a difference of two weeks in a contract.

Not a bad idea...........

I spoke with a trusted apple employee who has been there for a number of years today and even he doesn't know what it is going on. He said it was going to be "total chaos".

Someone is going to get hurt. Imagine 100s of people lining up all day to get the phone, only 50 show up and even then not everyone in line is allowed to buy one or will be forced to buy outrageous plans. People are going to get pissed and someone is going to get hurt. I honestly hope that they sue Apple and AT&T and win. Not that I like lawsuits like this, but only revealing restrictions an hour and a half before launch is going to create chaos, and Apple and AT&T are the ones creating it.

Yeah that's what I did...my contract was up in May...I was having problems with my RAZR (3rd one) and so I asked them to replace it with a new Treo 680. Didn't really think they would but I finally negotiated them into giving me the Treo for $175 with no new contract. Then I went through warranty exchange and got a replacement for my RAZR...since they're rebranding to AT&T they sent me a brand new RAZR with the AT&T engraved on the back. pretty sweet.

Anyone want to buy a Treo?:D

Sue? For what, exactly? I don't see a breach of promise, or willful negligence, or anything else that is actionable.

It's just a freaking phone. Nobody is entitled to anything, nor do they have a "reasonable expectation" of anything. It's called "you pays yer money, you takes yer chances."

I sense your frustration, but I think we can get past this without frustration, and the best way (and guaranteed to pull the rug out from under the media frenzy) is to have everybody just order online and wait for the FedEx guy. Sure, it'll take a little longer, but we've been waiting since January, right? ;)

I am with Verizon presently, and I have replaced my Treo 700p 5 times now. The last time I replaced it, I was able to convince them to exchange it for a Blackberry, but they said I had to buy a battery and charger. With 2 months (at the time) left for the iPhone it didn't seem like it was worth it :D

My Treo will be on eBay the night I get my iPhone. I am sure there will be a LOT of cell phones on eBay right after it. If you aren't buying an iPhone and want a new phone dirt cheap, that will be the way to go :p

For when someone gets hurt. There is going to be a stampede, line rushers, someone getting pissed when they don't get a phone or are told they're going to have to sign up for $90/mo worth of service to get one, etc.

Its like if I say I'm selling a 75mpg car. Then you get there and I say you have to buy all your gas through me, as well as a number of other restrictions. The car is hyped beyond reason and people consider it unreasonable and get angry and riot (see Black Friday and some PS3/Wii/360 launches). Yea I know the analogy sucks, but hopefully you get my point.

I think Apple this one time should announce details of the contracts now to avoid unnecessary bloodshed.

Um, how the hell can you compare a car to a cell phone ? I have to ask, is this your first cell phone ?

That's why every store needs a lottery. Have all the lemming... er people grab a number. One thru 50 get a phone, and the others go home. Pretty simple, no 4 hours waits, no problems.

Sounds like you're a long time apple customer. :D

This is an amazing way to create a riot. People who were camping out would totally flip if they camped and found out that they are doing a lottery.

It will be a mess no matter how you slice it. Tons of people will not get the iPhone, and lots of people will be upset. Its just what it will be.

I personally cannot WAIT to see all the angry posts here from people who couldn't get one! I've got my popcorn all ready for the entertainment.
