Let's face it, there's no reason for the Xr to be nearly as large as a plus. This is a blatant move on Apple's part to be like "See, we offered a phone with new tech at the lower end of the price spectrum" knowing full well that a lot of the people shopping at the lower price point are probably also interested in smaller phones. Seems like a dirty move to push people to spend a whopping $250 more for a Xs. Sure the 7 and 8 are still around, but if you want current tech without it being obscenely large, this is clearly a blatant money grab to push you to the $1k phone.

Except the XS isn't all that much smaller than the XR.

But the 10s is already a bit larger than a 7 or 8, so if you just keep getting "a little bigger" it ends up being a lot bigger. Just like how a 10s Max is "just a few bucks more a month" which has now resulted in $1500 phones, forget $1k.

My view. If you want the Xr and you’re going to buy the xr, you’re not getting pushed to buy the Xs.

If you’re gonna claim you went to buy the Xr but bought the Xs, you might find $300+ more value in the Xs.

I really don't agree with your logic. Apple didn't make the XR larger to push people onto the XS. People want larger phones and they can offer such a phone at a lower price point. If anything, the XR is going to eat into XS sales, not the other way around.

Exactly this, and I’m sure this is why the XR will be released a month later. Last year I think a lot of people went for the 8 vs the X because they wanted a new phone NOW, not a month later, and they spent less in the process. Apple knows this and now put the more expensive offering first.

The OP is the only intelligent person I’ve across in some time.

If the XR and XS were identical apart for size, there’s a good chance I’d pay a premium for the smaller device.

The current XS is already too big for me. I would rather pay USD 800-1000 for a 5.2” X style phone than USD 600-800 for a 6/6.5” phone with even better specs. Just saying. The smaller screen is worth a lot more to most. And that’s a fact outside of MR.

Your thread title is simply absurd,as is your 3-line 1st sentence. Actually, your entire post is totally off base. It is a brilliant move to make new tech available at a reasonable price.

Don't agree at all. Even if they were, it's a business and they'll do what they feel will get them the most return. Buy what you like, don't buy what you don't.

LOL! If the OP is the ONLY intelligent person you've come across in some time,I feel for you. Simple as that. Aside from that fact, his entire post on the subject is totally off base.

Like most iphone screen resolutions, it's down to maths.

The screen is the same 326 PPI as the iphone 6/7/8.

And I guess to have iPhone X apps display correctly, they were limited to a certain screen resolution, to help Developers not have to rewrite everything for yet another screen size.

Apple wouldn't have sat down and said, lets do a screen thats 0.3" bigger than the iPhons Xs. It just had to be that size.

Im sure they would have preferred it not to be bigger. Most people think bigger is better, and in this case it isnt.

Apple want it to be clear the iPhone XS is the premium phone, but to most people it looks like the cheapest.... purely on screen size.

I’m REALLY excited, as someone that’s always had “plus envy”, for screen size, but just can’t get down w/ the physical size of that phone.
I thought the X would sate me, but though it technically had a “bigger” screen than the plus, the change of aspect ratio gave it far less actual real estate... this is my chance to finally use a huge screen phone, that hopefully I don’t find awkward!

I'm with you. I prefer a smaller phone, but also a cheaper phone. Xr: too big. Xs: too expensive. I'll stay with my iPhone 7.

Your whole argument falls completely flat considering the market has been showing for awhile now that most people want the larger phones. By making the XR larger they are making it more attractive to the general public than the more expensive XS

The XR is only 8mm shorter and 3mm narrower so you will notice very little, if any difference to the previous Plus models I would say. You get a slightly bigger screen out of it though.

Yes, they’ve designed and created a completely new phone just to make people buy another phone. That makes perfect sense you really are on to something there!

Haha, then they finally got me to commit to an “oversized” phone!!
I’m pretty jazzed about that screen... I hope I do see the difference between the 5.8” & the 6.1”...
(I’m sure coming directly from the 6S I’ve been using for the last few months will help me appreciate it more. )

I don't see any reason they couldn't have offered a second Xr in the body size of the current 7/8. The market might be trending towards larger phones, but this is still the bread and butter size in sales volume for Apple and there's still a significant business case at that size.

My thinking was so that it didn't piss off Plus users who don't want to spend $1100 on a new phone but still want to keep their landscape mode app functionality. The iPhone X is a bit too narrow so Apple doesn't allow that.
