I have a 3GS with 3.1 and this app takes FOREVER to load anything. I can go to Safari on the iphone and load youtube stuff almost instantly.

Why do they bother putting it on the phone?

I do not have that issue on a 3G so you shouldn't have that issue on the 3GS.

I have always found the YouTube application to be pretty pointless without WiFi. When I had the original iPhone I could understand the quality loss while using Edge as the primary network source. However, with the 3G and 3GS there should be a lot less quality loss while using the 3G network. I understand it taxes the network a bit, but I would rather wait the extra 5-10 seconds for it to load then have it play with horrible quality.

The only time I have found myself using the YouTube application is at home in my person WiFi spot. I have never once tried to show a friend a video over 3G because they would expect the iPhone to be able to produce a clear video over AT&T's network.

That is just my two cents. :p

(Edit: I never actually contributed to the original post. I will say that my YouTube application does take longer then all of my other applications to load. I have an iPhone 3G 16GB.)

On WIFI at my house. 3G service with 5 bars is the same. The app takes about 30 seconds or more to load.

I was curious and just tried YouTune App since I just updated to 3.1 a few days ago. I had not used it in some time and it took 2 minutes on WiFi to even load the main page. Before updating to 3.1 YouTube would load in just seconds.
Every other WiFi dependent App on my phone works fine. Glad I don't use YouTube very often or I would be a little upset. It's with 3 dot 1 or the site is having issues.

My 3gs is always having problems with youtube. Sometimes video cant load. Cant bookmark videos saying youtube unavailable.Forever to load stuff. Dont even bother using it sometimes cause its so glitchy anymore. 1st gen ipod touch works great with youtube. they need to fix it.

Makes me feel a little better. I will try my girlfriends Ipod touch when she comes home and see if it is better. Loading youtube from Safari on the Iphone is quick. I am not sure how apps work really so I don't know why it would be different.

*Today was the first I have tried to access it via the app. I never tried it before I updated to 3.1

After all the issues that I've heard about 3.1. I'm glad I haven't updated.

Since my 3gs is jailbroken I have 3g unrestrictor and it fixes the quality of the YouTube videos if I don't get wifi.

I haven't updated to 3.1 yet and my YouTube app opens in a second... 8GB iPhone 3G. Your problem must be related to the update.

My 3GS, on 3.1, is having the same issue.

If I click a YouTube link in Safari, it opens and plays right away. But in the app, Featured and Most Viewed take ages to load, if they load at all. Wifi, 3g, doesn't matter.

I never use the app, mostly because it does not have the "did you mean" feature that the youtube website has..

My 3G would always load YouTube fast, but my 3GS takes FOREVER to do anything. I've also noticed some of the games on my phone are much slower on the 3GS than they were on the 3G. :(

Youtube normally loads quickly on my 3GS. Tried it tonight and noticed that they are doing site maintenance which is slowing everything down on Youtube's end.

Maybe that is the issue? I just talked to someone that has a 3G and 3.0.1 and he is having the same issues with the app itself.

Is the app attached to youtube in a different way than Safari is when you access youtube that way? Sorry for the ignorant question, but I really don't have any idea how the app works.

Occasionally, videos will load slow for me (I'm on 3.0.1, jailbroken) on the YouTube app. When they do, I use this mod called YourTube that allows me to download YouTube videos in HQ directly from the YouTube app. It's very nice for when I'm on the 3G network and still want to watch WiFi-quality video.

It's odd, because the YouTube video would be slow to stream, and yet download via YourTube at about 100 KB/s.

YouTube definitely does have issues with speed, but what can you expect from a website with so much traffic?

Youtube slow.

I've had similar problems with loading Youtube vids not fully downloading and the app loading to its front page. Don't know if this will help but...

Last night I poked around the net for some answers and someone said that routers running 802.11 B&G mixed would make it go slower. I turned off wifi and just ran it on 3G, admittedly it seemed to work better!

Tried setting the Airport to run only in 'B' (no biggie as modem is capped at about 6 Mb/s) but didn't get too much success. Still messing with the multicast settings too.

Here's the link, maybe someone else could have some luck. Its from 2008 but I had similar download problems on my 2G as well.

It was just a temporary thing. I withdrew my bug report. Opens instantly on 3G and WiFi on my 3GS 3.1.
