When you swipe down, you get the search page plus a nice, dark keyboard

How can you get this keyboard all the time?

With iOS 11, it seems they’ve moved to including this darker keyboard in more places. However, the dark/light keyboard themes are defaults of the OS which cannot be toggled. This means Apple controls the cosmetics, not the user.

You could look into third-party solutions if you’re intent on the dark theme. GBoard makes a dark keyboard, as do others I’m sure. I do know that third party options have been glitchy in iOS in the past though, so watch out for that. Do some research and see what others like, and which are stable.

If you’re running beta software, keep in mind that these may not be smooth until public release.

I already have/use Google’s keyboard - I’m so used to “swiping” for keyboard entry. Maybe in 3-4 years Apple will add this option.

In 3-4 years we wouldn't have an iPhone. We'll have an iComm where we will communicate with others using comms built into our heads.

Yeah, they’re still are a bad experience on devices like the iPad Air/iPod Touch 5G due to the lack of RAM I suppose. On my Pro though they’re flawless.

Gotcha, that’s good to hear. I’ve never really delved into the third party keyboard space myself, I just know what others have said. Which do you prefer?

I switch on and off it, but I like Nintype, though it may be too complicated for a lot of people as it’s very modifiable so it takes time to set up. Gboard is nice as well as it’s nice and straight forward.

It's not a dark theme, but a result of the dark background. The keyboard is a bit transparent by default.

Ahhh, that’s what is doing it. I had to find an app with a dark background where I could input text and see that now.

I’ve used Google’s keyboard and SwiftKey on Android for years. They have iOS versions but I’m noticing Google’s lags. Maybe it’s not 100% ready for iOS 11? I just installed SwiftKey and it’s doing great. No lags that I’m noticing.

The only other one I’m familiar with, and it’s by the company’s name, not the keyboard app is from “Go”. They do a lot of Android apps and left a sour taste for me - they had multiple free apps for years and then started adding ads to the free versions after introducing "pro" versions. I also recall reading that their apps may "spy" on users. Spy may be too strong of a word though as I think Apple and Android allow some amount of "tracking"...
